Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Nearly 25,000 students across Hampton Roads participated in the Admirals All-Star Reader Program this fall, the Admirals announced today.
In its third season, the Admirals All-Star Reader Program was created to encourage elementary school students to read. The program begins at the beginning of the school year and lasts through early November. Students who complete the program receive free tickets to Admirals games. Admirals players have begun visiting the classrooms in each participating school district that read the most books this season for a complimentary pizza party.
"We are delighted that so many students participated in the All-Star Reader Program this season," said Admirals Vice President Joe Gregory. "The purpose of the All-Star Reader Program is to show children the importance that reading plays in their lives. We hope that they enjoy coming to Admirals games, but are even more hopeful that they better understand the value of reading because of this program."
"Special thanks go out to all teachers and reading specialists throughout the area who helped make this program a success. We look forward to continuing the program in the future."
Fifty-one elementary schools and one Boy Scout troop participated in the program last month. Nearly 140,000 books were read this season, bringing the program's three-year total to nearly 370,000 books read. Participants this season were from schools in Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk and York County.
In order to earn Admirals tickets, students in grade levels K-2 read ten books and students in grade levels 3-5 read five books. Students who completed the program received Admirals bookmarks that entitled them to tickets to Admirals games.
For more information about the program, please contact the Admirals at (757) 640-1212 or email admiralsinfo@norfolkadmirals.com.
