December 8, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release

The Syracuse Crunch announced that racing legend Mario Andretti will appear during a special Chevron Night at the club's December 12 game vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Andretti, 68, is known worldwide for his racing career which spanned five decades and saw him take the checkered flag 111 times. He is an icon that is widely regarded as the greatest race car driver in the history of the sport.

A native of Montona, Italy (now Croatia), Andretti and his family immigrated to the United States in 1955, settling in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Having already been introduced to racing in Italy, Mario's love for the sport was fueled even more when he discovered a racetrack near his new home.

Andretti started racing professionally in 1959 at the age of 19 and went on to become the only man to ever win the Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500 and Formula One World Championship. Two of his sons, Michael and Jeff, and his nephew, John, have followed in his footsteps as professional race car drivers.

Andretti will be signing autographs in Memorial Hall during the first intermission.
