Albany Sweeps Norfolk, But Winning Streak Snapped On The Road

December 8, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany River Rats News Release

The River Rats were rolling into Week 9 having secured points in their last five games. On Wednesday night they took an early lead on the Norfolk Admirals, but could not hang on in regulation and had to go to the eighth round of the shootout to slip away with a 3-2 win. There would be no suspense on Friday night as the goals came early and often. Albany scored three times in the first period on their way to an 8-1 rout of Norfolk, their biggest goal-output of the year, and it tied a franchise record for the largest margin of victory. The Rats carried their three-game winning streak on the road to face the defending Eastern Conference champion Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Penguins, who did not play Friday, were rested and waiting and jumped all over Albany right from the start.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored in the first minute on rookie goaltender David Leggio, making his first AHL start, and they never looked back as they cruised to a 7-3 win. Sunday the Rats traveled to Rochester where their offense was stifled by a brilliant goaltending display from Mike Brodeur, who played in his first AHL game of the season. Brodeur stopped all 28 shots he faced for his first career AHL shutout and the Amerks claimed a 4-0 win.
