December 30, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Christian Soucy recorded 33 saves and Yvan Corbin factored in all four Anchorage goals in a 4-2 win over Idaho Sunday that gave the Aces their first victory over the Steelheads in 11 tries this season.

The Anchorage Aces' office will be closed New Year's Day, and team will not hold an official practice until Saturday, January 4, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at Sullivan Arena. The Aces return to action the following Tuesday and Wednesday, January 7-8, against the Fresno Falcons. Both games are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start. Anchorage is 1-4 on its current homestand but has won two of three meetings with the Falcons this year, all three of which have been played in Fresno. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.

Don't wait...act now! Everyone who purchases a Super Saturday 5-Pack by January 3, 2003 will be eligible for a chance to win a trip for two to San Diego! Travel with the Aces to sunny Southern California - airfare, accommodations, game tickets and dinner included in the Grand Prize (No purchase necessary, call for details).

After losing the first two games of the Idaho series by a score of 6-3, Anchorage grabbed an early lead Sunday on goals by Dean Larson and Kimbi Daniels. But the Steelheads rallied to tie the game heading into the final period, only to see Corbin score just 49 seconds into the third to give the Aces a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish. Corbin added an insurance goal eight minutes later and Anchorage (10-21-1 overall, six points behind Fresno for the last playoff spot) would hold on to end a run of 13 consecutive losses to Idaho dating back to last year's Taylor Cup playoffs.

With eight points this weekend, Larson once again has surged into the WCHL scoring lead with 40 points. In his eighth year as an Ace, he also leads the league in shooting percentage and places third in goals and assists. Larson's 16 goals leave him one behind Corbin, who shares the WCHL lead with Idaho's Marty Flichel. Corbin had seven points against the Steelheads to increase his season total to 35, tied for fifth (with Flichel) in the WCHL.

Anchorage may not be busy on the ice this week, but its players will be popping up in the community throughout the New Year's festivities. Larson, Daniels, Mike Marostega, Tim Donnelly, J.J. Wrobel, and Dave Csumrik will be visiting the Providence Hospital on New Year's Eve at 1:30 p.m., visiting the children's wards and signing autographs.
