Aces End Idaho Domination

December 30, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Yvan Corbin scored two third period goals to break a 2-2 tie as the Anchorage Aces snapped a 10-game losing streak to Idaho with a 4-2 victory before 2,701 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces pounced on the seemingly flat Steelheads with two goals in a span of 77 seconds midway through the first period. Kimbi Daniels flicked a wrist shot from the left circle through a screened Idaho goaltender Jason Cugnet, and Dean Larson followed with a blistering slapshot that gave Anchorage a 2-0 lead. The Steelheads, who had scored three power play goals in Saturday's win over the Aces, struck again with the man advantage as Marty Flichel scored with 1:54 showing on the first period clock.

Idaho's top-ranked power play unit again came through early in the second frame, as Joe Rybar lit the lamp at 4:07 to forge a 2-2 tie. The score remained that way until early in the third period, when Larson found Yvan Corbin all alone in front for the go-ahead goal just 49 seconds into the final stanza. Corbin beat Cugnet again with 11:31 remaining, and the Steelheads (22-7-3) failed to answer, due in large part to the goaltending of Christian Soucy, who finished with 33 saves to earn the win.

Corbin and Flichel are now tied atop the WCHL with 17 goals and Larson is just one behind with 16. Daniels had an assist to go along with his ninth goal of the campaign while Kevin McNeill dished out a pair of helpers. In addition to being Anchorage's first win over Idaho since Game One of last year's Taylor Cup playoffs, the Aces (10-21-1) also ended a four-game losing streak and dealt the Steelheads only their third loss in the last 19 games.

Anchorage will enjoy a nine-day break before returning to Sullivan Arena for the final two games of this homestand Tuesday and Wednesday night, January 7-8, against Fresno at 7:00 p.m. AST. The Aces are 2-1 versus the Falcons this year, with all three previous meetings taking place at Fresno's Selland Arena. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
