San Diego Extends Winning Streak to Double Figures

December 30, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - "They're baaaack..." Not the spooky ghosts in "Poltergeist," but the San Diego Gulls. After another perfect week, the Blue and Orange have run its winning streak to 10 and have the other West Coast Hockey League teams shaking in their skates.

Before their hot streak started, the Gulls (18-10-1) were in fifth place out of a playoff spot. Now, they're all the way back to second place, tied with the Bakersfield Condors with 37 points apiece. And don't look now, but San Diego is only 10 points behind (with three games in hand) of the first-place Idaho Steelheads.

Trevor Koenig sure made his bid to win his third straight WCHL Goaltender of the Week honors. The all-star netminder went 3-0 last week, allowing only one goal.

Koenig has tied a career high with a nine-game personal winning streak. In those games, he has four shutouts and a 0.92 goals against average. He's the overall league leader with 17 wins, a 1.81 GAA and five shutouts. Those five goose eggs tie a single-season record (set by him and Blair Allison).

San Diego's offense has been red-hot as well. The Gulls have out-scored their opponents 46-12 during their run, getting contributions from all three lines. Mark Pederson and Dean Tiltgen are both riding eight-game point streaks. Pederson has 17 points over his last 10 games, while Tiltgen has 14 points during his streak. Cory Cyrenne and Sylvain Deschatelets both have five-game point streaks.
