Indianapolis Indians News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A seven-run third inning gave the Indians a series-levelling victory over Iowa last night, 7-2. Down 1-0 following an RBI single by Dixon Machado in the top of the third, the Indians erupted against right-hander Caleb Kilian. Carter Bins opened the frame with a second-pitch homer 420 feet to straightaway center field to knot the game at 1-1. The Indians then plated six additional runs as they hit for the cycle as a team in a span of five batters. Cal Mitchell broke the tie with an RBI double, Bligh Madris drove in one with a single, Travis Swaggerty roped a two-run triple and Mason Martin capped the frame with his 13th longball this season. The I-Cubs plated their second run in the top of the seventh on a Jackson Frazier solo home run, but in total were held to just four hits as Indy's pitchers were dominant throughout the contest.

SWAGGERTY'S SPEED: Travis Swaggerty began last night's game on a hot note, roping both a double and triple in his first two at-bats. With runners at the corners with two outs and three of Indy's eventual seven runs scored in the inning, Swaggerty shot a three-bagger into the right-field corner to plate two. Swaggerty has turned on the jets a team-high tying five times this season (also: Mason Martin), which is also tied for third among International League batters. The Indians as a team have flashed their speed with an International League-leading 28 triples this season, which ranks third in all of Triple-A behind Albuquerque (30) and Oklahoma City (29).

MARTIN MASHING: Following a slow June, Mason Martin launched his team-leading 13th home run of the season - a two-run shot to bookend a seven-run third inning opened by Carter Bins' fourth homer. Martin has now reached base safely in all six games played so far in July, with hits in five of those contests good for a .286 average (6-for-21). When Indy's heavy-hitting first baseman is on a tear, he's dominant against opposing pitching. He launched four homers while hitting .303 (23-for-76) during his April Player of the Month campaign, and in May he went on a run with seven home runs, including a stretch of five homers in six games.

MASTERING THE I-CUBS: In his return to the Indians lineup last night after spending the last month in the big leagues, Bligh Madris went 2-for-4 with a triple against his favorite International League team to hit against. In 47 games with the Indians this season, the left-handed outfielder is hitting .309 (50-for-162) with a .388 on-base percentage and .919 OPS. In 22 career games against Iowa dating back to 2021, Madris is hitting .400 (26-for-65) with seven doubles, one triple, three home runs and as many walks (10) as strikeouts (10). Ji-Hwan Bae (.306 AVG, 1.001 OPS) and former I-Cub Taylor Davis (.333 AVG) have also been dominant against Iowa this season.

PITCH PERFECT: The Indians pitching staff combined for a dominant performance against the I-Cubs last night to earn the win. Miguel Yajure started the game and surrendered one run on three hits with six punchouts, and the bullpen combined to allow just one additional baserunner via a solo home run over the final four innings. Zach Matson, Joe Jacques and Matt Eckelman each held the I-Cubs without a hit in their respective innings. The pitching staff handed out seven total strikeouts in the contest and issued no walks for just the third time this season, the first since April 27 at Iowa.

TONIGHT: After tying up the series with a victory last night, the Indians will look to retake the series lead at Victory Field tonight at 7:05 PM ET. This is the second series between the two teams this season and the first at Victory Field after Indy took four of six games at Principal Park earlier this year. For the Indians today, Osvaldo Bido will make his fourth career start against Iowa and second of the series after pitching into a no-decision as the Indians won in 10 innings on Monday night. Countering for the I-Cubs is University of Iowa product Matt Dermody, who has made five total appearances (one start) against Indianapolis in his Triple-A career between Buffalo and Iowa. His last outing at Victory Field came on 6/12/19 when he surrendered two earned runs in 1.0 inning in relief. He made a start against Indy at Principal Park earlier this season and surrendered two runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss.

BEE-DOH, BEE-DOH, BEE-DOH: Osvaldo Bido will take the mound tonight for his second start of the series after earning a no-decision in Monday's Fourth of July celebration. After surrendering one run on two hits and a walk in the top of the first inning, Bido surrendered just two baserunners over his next three frames and retired seven in a row. A leadoff single in the fifth and one-out, two-run homer tagged Bido with the game-tying runs and ended his day in a knotted contest. His 5.0 innings thrown tied his season high (also: 6/1 at Omaha). The three earned runs were also his first given up to Iowa this season, after surrendering just one unearned run across two starts (7.1ip) earlier this season.

THIS DATE IN 2006: In the final game before the All-Star break, starter Marty McLeary struck out 11 batters in 6.1 innings vs. Toledo en route to a 6-2 Indians win. McLeary was in line for the loss as he surrendered two earned runs in the sixth inning, but Indianapolis tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth and handed him a no-decision. McLeary finished the season with a team-leading 115 strikeouts and 2.68 ERA.
