Worcester Red Sox News Release

WORCESTER, M.A. - A ninth-inning rally pushed the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (40-43) past the Worcester Red Sox (43-40), a 3-2 final at Polar Park on Saturday afternoon. The WooSox celebrated PawSox Heritage Day, donning Pawtucket jerseys and hats in the ballgame.

The game was tied at one entering the bottom of the eighth inning, a frame that began with a pair of singles for the WooSox. After a strikeout and a walk, Ronaldo Hernandez came to the plate with the bases loaded. He saw one ball go by, then ripped the second he pitch he saw through the hole on the left side for a go-ahead RBI single to put the home team on top 2-1.

But Scranton/Wilkes-Barre answered in the ninth-Worcester's regular closer, Kaleb Ort, was called up to Boston, and the WooSox turned to Zack Kelly to close the game. The RailRiders put two on with no outs, and Rob Brantly delivered a game-tying RBI single to left. Max McDowell was next, and he cracked a go-ahead sac-fly to make it 3-2.

Shane Greene held Worcester scoreless in the ninth, sealing a 3-2 RailRiders' win.

Early on, Brian Keller got the start for the WooSox and delivered five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven and allowing five hits with one walk. Over his last two starts, the right-hander now has the following line: 10 IP, 13 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 15 K.

SWB's lone run against Keller came in the top of the fifth inning, a rally that started with a single and a double. Rob Brantly came up, and with the infield in, he hit a shallow pop up that found a spot on the grass in center for an RBI single. Keller walked the next batter, then retired three in a row to keep it a 1-0 deficit.

His offense answered in the bottom of the inning, a rally that began with a Ryan Fitzgerald single. He stole second, then moved to third on a ground ball to the right side. Johan Mieses followed with a deep fly ball to left, a sac-fly that scored Fitzgerald to tie the game at one.

Hernandez' single gave Worcester a momentary lead, but SWB's two-run rally in the ninth marked the tenth time this season the WooSox lost a game during an opponents' last at-bat of the game.

The WooSox conclude the six-game series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, affiliate of the New York Yankees. On the mound, Nathan Eovaldi is scheduled to make a rehab start, facing Ken Waldichuk (2-2, 2.52). Radio coverage is live at 12:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is on NESN.
