July 9, 2022 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release

TONIGHT'S GAME: Iowa and Indianapolis are set to play game five of their six-game series tonight, with Matt Dermody squaring off against Osvaldo Bido. Dermody enters the game with a 3-3 record and a 4.77 ERA through 16 games with Iowa. The southpaw is in line to make his 11th start of the season, his most since he made 12 starts in 2014 with Single-A Lansing. Entering tonight's start, Dermody leads the team in innings pitched with 60.1 and is third in strikeouts with 46. He is set to face Indianapolis for the second time this season, taking the loss back on April 29 when he allowed just two earned runs on six hits over 4.2 innings pitched. Opposite of Dermody will be Bido toeing the rubber for Indianapolis. Bido is already making his second start against Iowa this series and fourth of the year after starting two games in the first series the two teams played. Bido is 1-4 with a 4.97 ERA through 18 games with Indianapolis, allowing 32 earned runs on 54 hits over 58.0 innings. He has struck out 54 batters and walked 39 over that span.

NEED MORE HITS: Iowa was out-hit 11-4 in last night's 7-2 loss to Indianapolis, falling to 2-2 in the series. With the loss, Iowa dropped to just 3-21 when they allow their opponent to get 10 or more hits and 4-29 when they are out-hit by their opponent. On the other side of that, Iowa is 23-10 when they record 10 or more hits and are 30-11 when they out-hit their opponent. They are just 2-5 when having an equal hit total as their opponent this year.

TYING HIS LONG: Trent Giambrone went 1-for-3 last night with a run scored, tying his season long hitting streak at four games. Over the four-game hitting streak, the infielder is hitting .429 (6-for-14) with four runs scored, a double, a walk, two strikeouts and a stolen base. His on-base percentage is .467 while he is slugging .500 on his current stretch. In his four-game stretch, Giambrone has two multi-hit performances, just one shy of the number of multi-hit performances he had in his first 44 games.

DOING THEIR PART: Iowa's bullpen has been outstanding this series, allowing just two earned runs in their 18.1 innings pitched. Over that span, they have combined to allow just five walks while striking out 28 batters, keeping Iowa in every game so far. Despite allowing seven runs and losing by five yesterday, the bullpen combined to allow just three hits and two walks while striking out eight over their five innings.

MR. RELIABLE: Dixon Machado has been Iowa's leadoff hitter in 65 of their 81 games played this year, setting the table for the rest of the lineup. He went 1-for-4 last night, moving the number of games in which he has reached base this year to 65. He has reached base via a base hit, walk or hit by pitch in 92 % (65-of-71) of his games now. He leads the team in multi-hit efforts (19), games played (71), hits (81), doubles (14) and walks (41). He is among the International League leaders in batting average at .292 (8), on-base percentage of .389 (6) and hits with 81 (8). He has more walks (41) than he does strikeouts (33), getting on base with both base hits and free passes.

JACKSON IN ACTION: Jackson Frazier went 2-for-3 last night and drove in one of only two Iowa runs with his home run in the seventh inning. Though he snapped his season-high five-game hitting streak on Thursday, Frazier has now hit safely in six of his last seven games. In the first ten games the outfielder played for Iowa after being outrighted, he went just 8-for-41 with three doubles, good for a .195 average and a .268 slugging percentage. Since the calendar turned to July, however, he has turned it on, going 8-for-24 with his first three home runs of the year. That has given him a .333 average and a team-leading .708 slugging percentage this month. He has also collected nine RBI over that span, accounting for 28 percent of Iowa's total run production so far this month (9-of-32).

NOT THE THIRD: Indianapolis did all of their damage in the third inning last night, scoring all seven of their runs in the frame. This isn't something new for Iowa, as they have now allowed 61 runs in the third inning this year, the most in any single inning all year. The next highest is the eighth inning in which they have surrendered 57 runs. The majority of the damage all came with two outs last night, as they had scored just one run on a leadoff home run followed by a single and two fly outs to start the inning. They followed those two fly outs with a double, two singles, a triple and home run before ending the inning on a ground out.

BUMPS IN THE ROAD: Caleb Kilian was credited with his first Triple-A loss last night after giving up seven runs in three innings of work. Coming into last night's game, Kilian had compiled a 2-0 record and a 2.82 ERA through his first 12 starts at this level. Before his Major League debut on June 4, he held a Triple-A best 2.06 ERA in nine starts. After shuffling between Iowa and Chicago for the month of June, however, Kilian has been less consistent. In the three starts he's made since returning to Iowa most recently, he has allowed 11 earned runs, which is just one less than he allowed in the previous ten starts combined. Despite the recent trouble, Kilian still leads Iowa's roster in starter ERA (3.83) and strikeouts (64) while placing second in innings pitched (54.0).

AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: With the series tied at two games apiece, Iowa and Indianapolis will play game five of their six-game series tonight. After dropping game four last night, Iowa now trails the season series by two games, going 4-6 against the Indians this year. They moved to 35-53 against Indianapolis all-time and 16-27 against them all-time on the road. With the five-run loss last night, Iowa now trails Indianapolis in runs scored in the season series by nine, at 40-31. The two teams are tied in runs through the first four games of their current series, each scoring 16.

SHORT HOPS: Iowa dropped to 3-28 this year when scoring less than four runs, they are 33-17 when scoring four or more; Iowa is 0-27 on the year when allowing seven or more runs and 0-21 when scoring two or fewer runs...seven runs allowed by Caleb Kilian last night is the most runs allowed by a starter in any I-Cubs game this year.
