Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
WORCESTER, MA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (39-43) defeated the Worcester Red Sox 5-3 on Friday night. With the win, they've evened the season series against the WooSox through ten games and move to four games within .500 for the first time since April 30.
Estevan Florial once more started the scoring for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. With two outs in the third, Florial launched his team-leading eleventh homer of the year. It was his second home run off Red Sox pitcher Geoff Hartlieb in the series. The RailRiders added a pair off rehabber Garrett Whitlock in the top of the fifth. Oswald Peraza picked up his 29th RBI of the season with a single. Josh Breaux, in just his second appearance at the Triple-A level, found his first RBI with a single as well. He had singled his first at-bat earlier in the game for his first Triple-A hit.
Hayden Wesneski was solid in his 16th start of the season, tossing six scoreless innings with six strikeouts. The right-hander surrendered three straight hits to start the second but got out of the jam unscathed.
In the seventh inning, Bauers unloaded his second RailRiders homer with an awe-inspiring 470 foot long ball 111 MPH off the bat. The ball sailed over the seats in right-center and left the confines of Polar Park. It's amongst the longest home runs hit in Polar Park's young history. The RailRiders led 5-0 out of the inning. Jeter Downs sent his 16th homer of the year with a three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth as the lone offense for the WooSox in a 5-3 final.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders return to Polar Park for the final time this season. In the only trip they took here earlier in the season, the WooSox won four-of-six games with SWB winning the last two. After this series, the two will play 12 games all at PNC Field. The WooSox won four-of-six in Moosic last year from August 3 to August 8.
SUNDAY ON A SATURDAY - Domingo Germán will be the first Yankees rehabbing starting pitcher of the year tonight for the RailRiders. He's the third MLB rehabber for SWB in 2022, joining Tim Locastro and Aroldis Chapman. Germán is nursing a right shoulder impingement and has not pitched in a Major League game since October 1, 2021. He has made three rehab starts, tossing 10.1 innings with just one run allowed. He's made 18 career appearances and 15 career starts with the RailRiders with a .217 BAA and 1.11 WHIP. It's unclear whether Germán will be used as a starter or long reliever when he returns to the Yankees. Jhonny Brito is slated to piggyback after Germán's outing.
AT THE PAAAAHK - SWB has won five of their last six games at Polar Park, during which they're batting .275 (57-207) with a 2.89 ERA (17 ER in 53.0 IP). With yesterday's win, they are now 6-5 at this yard this season after starting out 0-4.
4-4-4, HOW DO YOU LIKE IT? - The RailRiders are just four games under .500 for the first time since April 30 when they were 9-13 on the season. They haven't been three games within .500 since April 29 (9-12).
SEVENTH HEAVEN? - The RailRiders have been in eighth place or lower in the International League East since May 1 (69 days). With a win tonight and a Norfolk loss, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would find themselves tied for seventh place. The Tides take on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp tonight at 6:35 PM on the road with Bruce Zimmerman on the mound.
KIKÉ? NO WAY! - Worcester currently has Kiké Hernández on a rehab assignment, coming back from a right hip issue. In his first game on Friday, Hernández went 0-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with two strikeouts. He has played 51 games with Boston this season but none since June 7. Hernández is in his second season with Boston after spending six seasons with the Dodgers.
JAKE SMASH - Friday, Jake Bauers launched his second RailRiders home run to right-center 111 MPH off the bat. It sailed 470 feet, good for the longest home run by an opponent in Polar Park history. The longest all-time homer at Polar Park was hit by Worcester's Tate Matheny on September 12, 2021, going 481 feet. Bauers' long ball is tied for the fourth longest amongst all batters at this yard all-time.
COMO LA FLOR - Estevan Florial hit his second home run of the series on Friday night. Both of his home runs in this set have been solo shots off Geoff Hartlieb. Florial finds himself on a nine-game hitting streak and currently leads the RailRiders in home runs, RBI, batting average, and stolen bases. He has a hit in 24 of his last 27 RailRiders games.
KEEPING UP WITH THE CABRERAS -Infielder Oswaldo Cabrera is on a Minor League rehab assignment with the Tampa Tarpons. He has played four games, three with Tampa and one in the Complex League. He has gone 3-for-11 with 2 RBI, 2 BB and 2 SB so far in his rehab. Cabrera had been held out of game action with a right shoulder issue since May 8. He played 22 games with SWB before being shut down.
STREAKY - Estevan Florial is on a nine-game hitting streak... Miguel Andújar is on a four-game hitting streak... Oswald Peraza is on an 18-game on-base streak... Jake Bauers is on a nine-game on-base streak...
ON DECK - The RailRiders return home on Tuesday, July 12 to host the Louisville Bats. It's "Twosday". Get 2-for-1 lawn or bleacher seats online only and enjoy $2 Landshark Lager tallboys for two hours after gates open, presented by PrimoHoagies and The River.
