ABOUT SUNDAY: The Indianapolis Indians sparked a three-run rally in the top of the eighth to bring the game to within one but could not overcome a four-run bottom half of the frame from the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park on Sunday afternoon, 9-4. With their lead cut to one late in the contest, Iowa put the game out of reach for Indianapolis. A two-out, bases-loaded single off the bat of Edwin Rios scored two and Alexander Canario plated the games' final runs with a two-RBI double to make it 9-4. The I-Cubs got on the board early with a sac fly by Matt Mervis in the bottom of the first. Iowa then extended the lead in the third courtesy of a two-run shot from Nelson Velazquez. P.J. Higgins roped an RBI single to right, and a wild pitch by Indians starter Luis Ortiz made it 5-0. Indianapolis got on the board in the fourth with an RBI single from Alika Williams. Down by four in the eighth, Rodolfo Castro led off the inning with a single, and Ryan Vilade reached on a four-pitch walk. Canaan Smith-Njigba sent an RBI double to center field, and Wiliams brought Indianapolis within one with a single that scored Vilade and Smith-Njigba before the I-Cubs responded with their four-run offensive burst.
VS. THE BATS: This week, the Indians and Bats will meet for their third six-game series of the season from July 25-30 at Victory Field. Indy has dominated the season series through two series at Louisville Slugger Field, owning a 9-3 record through 12 matchups this season - two of Indy's six series wins have come against Louisville. The Indians have outscored the Bats 74-59. Eight of the 12 matchups have been decided by two runs or less.
LETTING IT FLY: The Indians have homered in 10 of their last 11 games. They have homered 20 times since July 8, which is the second most in the International League in that span, trailing only Syracuse (26). During this stretch, Chris Owings and Alika Williams pace the team with four homers apiece, eight other Indians' hitters have homered.
CSN FINDS A WAY: Canaan Smith-Njigba is coming off a strong nine-game road trip in which he nearly reached base in half his plate appearances. He finished the road trip with a .457 on-base percentage, reaching base safely in 16 of 35 plate appearances. On Sunday, he finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, RBI and team-leading fourth double of the trip. The lefty slugger is tied with shortstop Alika Williams for the most doubles by an Indians batter this month with six. Smith-Njigba went 8-for-27 at the dish with two run scored and eight walks. The 24-year-old is hitting .254 (53-for-209) with 35 runs scored, 17 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 32 RBI and a .826 OPS in 57 total games with Indianapolis this season.

KE'BRYAN RETURNS TO THE VIC: The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes will begin a rehab assignment tonight with the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field as they begin a six-game homestand vs. the Louisville Bats. Hayes is the eighth major league rehabber assigned to Indy on nine different assignments this season, joining infielder Ji Man Choi, southpaw pitchers Jose Hernandez and Rob Zastryzny, and right-handed pitchers Wil Crowe, Chase De Jong, Robert Stephenson and Vince Velasquez. Hayes, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 7 with low back inflammation. In 75 games with Pittsburgh this season, he has hit .252 (73-for-290) with 26 extra-base hits. Defensively, he leads all National League third basemen (at least 600.0 innings) with a .986 fielding percentage (three errors in 212 total chances). Known for his defense, Hayes was named Indianapolis' Rookie of the Year in 2019 while taking home an MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award® at third base, the third straight of his MiLB career. In 117 career games with Indy between 2019 and 2021, he owns a .264 batting average (119-for-451) with 70 runs, 32 doubles, 12 home runs and 56 RBI.
TONIGHT: The Indians and I-Cubs conclude their six-game set at Principal Park on Sunday afternoon at 2:08 PM ET. This week is the team's third matchup of the season and second at Iowa. The teams split their first six-game series at Victory Field from May 16-21. In their most recent matchup, Iowa took five of six from June 13-18 at Iowa. The Indians can earn their fourth series split of the season with a win today. Today, in a rematch of Tuesday's pitching matchup, right-hander Luis Ortiz (2-3, 4.03) will take the mound against Iowa's left-hander Jordan Wicks (1-0, 6.08). Wicks allowed three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings, it was his first career outing against Indy.
