Zack Collins' Grand Slam Powers Bisons 5-3 Win in Columbus
May 27, 2022 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - Despite getting rained out the previous night, the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Columbus Clippers 5-3 on Friday night from Huntington Park to extend their season-best winning streak to six. The Bisons finished with just two hits all night, but both left the ballpark and drove in all five runs.
Weather would quickly become an issue yet again, as just one batter into the game, a downpour ensued which ultimately caused a 75-minute rain delay. When the game finally did resume, the Clippers had replaced starter Zach Draper who had already gotten warm prior to the interruption.
The Bisons and Clippers combined for just one hit through five innings; Maximo Castillo, making his second Triple-A start after going seven shutout innings last week, threw another 4.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit while striking out five.
The Herd's first hit of the ballgame would come in the sixth, when, after Clippers reliver Robert Broom walked the bases loaded, Zack Collins hit a grand slam to straightaway centerfield to break the scoring. The slam was the first hit as a Bison for Collins, who also got the start at first base in this one.
Columbus would quickly respond with a two-run homer off the bat of Will Benson in the bottom half, before Alex Call hit a solo shot of his own two batters later to cut the Bison lead to one.
Logan Warmoth would provide an insurance run in the top of the ninth with his fourth home run of the season, and after Bowden Francis threw two no-hit innings of relief, Derek Holland got the job done in the ninth to lock up the win.
The Bisons and Clippers will continue their six-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow night in order to make up yesterday's rainout. Game one will feature Thomas Hatch against Tanner Tully, with first pitch set for 5:05 p.m. EST. Game two will begin roughly half an hour after the conclusion of game one.
