Iowa Cubs News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (23-21) scored seven runs over the last four innings to defeat the Memphis Redbirds (24-21) by a score of 8-5 in game two of the series at AutoZone Park. In Thursday's originally scheduled game, the two teams went back-and-forth but the Redbirds prevailed in extra-innings to win 7-5 and take a 2-1 series lead.
In game two of the series that started on Wednesday, Iowa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Trent Giambrone hit his second home run of the season. Memphis answered with three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth, ending Caleb Kilian's day.
It marked the first time all year that Kilian has allowed more than one earned run in any single outing, allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks over his five innings pitched.
Trailing 4-1, Iowa scored a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before the game went into a rain delay. The game was suspended due to inclement weather in the eighth and resumed on Thursday in a 4-4 tie with runners on first and second for Jared Young.
Young delivered right away, clubbing a two-run double to give Iowa the lead back. They added two more that inning and one in the ninth, growing their lead to 8-4. The Redbirds got a solo shot from Luken Baker in the home half of the ninth to make it 8-5, but Bryan Hudson would retire the side to give the I-Cubs their first win of the series.
Iowa and Memphis went back-and-forth in Thursday's scheduled game, with the I-Cubs striking first. They did so on an RBI single from Narciso Crook. The Redbirds didn't trail for long, scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Alec Burleson and Baker.
Crook doubled and Dixon Machado knocked an RBI single giving Iowa the lead back at 3-2 in the fourth. Despite only allowing two runs, Iowa's starter Cam Sanders threw just 2.2 innings, forcing the bullpen to pick up the remainder of the game.
Aneuris Rosario was the first man called on, who got through the third and fourth without allowing a run, but surrendered the lead in the fifth. Memphis scored three runs in that fifth inning, taking a 5-3 lead. Once again, the I-Cubs answered, scoring two runs in the sixth on a two-run blast from John Hicks.
After those two runs in the sixth, both teams were kept off the board through nine innings. Brandon Waddell kept Iowa scoreless in the top of the 10th and Burleson clubbed a two-run walk-off blast to give Memphis a 7-5 win.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Jared Young went 2-for-2 with a run scored, two doubles and two runs batted in. The first basemen pinch-hit in the eighth inning, driving in the go-ahead runs.
- Brendon Little spun two more scoreless frames for Iowa, walking one and striking out one in the outing. The southpaw has now thrown eight straight scoreless innings over his first six games with the I-Cubs.
- Cayne Ueckert and Erich Uelmen combined to throw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three.
- Iowa moved to 2-2 in extra innings with the loss tonight. The walk-off blast also marked the second time this year their opponent has hit a walk-off.
Iowa and Memphis are set to play game four of their six-game series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 at AutoZone Park. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
