Indians' Offense Stalled in Loss to Saints, 8-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Canaan Smith-Njigba and Ji-Hwan Bae extended their impressive on-base streaks as the Indianapolis Indians fell to the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field on Thursday night, 8-1.

Smith-Njigba extended his on-base streak to a career-high and International League-leading 28 games as one of two Indians batters with multi-hit games in the contest. Bae's on-base streak was extended to 23 games - the third-longest in the IL - as he went 1-for-3 with a walk.

The Indians (23-21) scored first for the third consecutive game in the bottom of the first inning. Following a leadoff single, Oneil Cruz stole second base and came around to score on consecutive throwing errors by catcher Jose Godoy and center fielder Jake Cave.

The Saints (18-26) won in comeback fashion for the second time in as many games after being held scoreless in their first three offensive frames. In the bottom of the fourth, On back-to-back pitches, Minnesota Twins No. 1 prospect Royce Lewis singled to third and Alex Kirilloff launched a home run to right-center field to give St. Paul a 2-1 advantage.

The Saints then tallied four additional runs in the bottom of the fifth frame, capitalizing off a pair of two-out RBI singles from Lewis and Kirilloff to make it 4-1. Spencer Steer followed with his first Triple-A homer to give St. Paul a 6-1 lead.

St. Paul then added one run in each of the sixth and seventh frames, courtesy of Godoy and left fielder Mark Contreras, to seal the 8-1 victory.

In his eighth start this season, Osvaldo Bido (L, 0-3) surrenderred six runs on six hits with five punchouts in 4.2 innings. In his first appearance with the Indians, Zach Matson tossed 1.2 innings in relief, yielding two runs on four hits and issuing two walks.

St. Paul's starter Mario Sanchez (W, 3-1) tossed a quality start with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

The Indians and Saints will face off in the fifth game of the seven-game set tomorrow night at 8:07 PM ET. Indians RHP Cody Bolton (1-1, 3.33) will toe the rubber vs. Saints RHP Dereck Rodriguez (2-0, 1.74).
