THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia and Delmarva's series opener slated for Thursday night was postponed due to unplayable grounds and Friday's game was canceled due to unplayable grounds. West Virginia last played on Wednesday night against Greensboro; a 7-2 Power loss to the Grasshoppers. The Hoppers took a 2-0 lead against Buddy Borden in the second and added a run in the third. After an Avery Romero home run pushed Greensboro ahead 4-0, the Power scored twice to halve the deficit. Candon Myles scored on a throwing error in the fifth and Wyatt Mathisen crossed on a ground out by Justin Maffei in the seventh. The Grasshoppers scored three more runs with the benefit of a base hit to clinch a series sweep. Borden took the loss and Jarlin Garcia garnered the win.
11 STRAIGHT: The Power have lost 11 consecutive games. This winless stretch is the longest in franchise history dating back to the 2005 season. No West Virginia team had lost more than eight games in a row at any point over the last nine-plus seasons.
Over half of the team's losses this year have come during one of their three longest losing streaks, total 25 games. West Virginia has had losing streaks of 11, eight and seven games this season.
THREE MORE TO GO: The first half of the 2014 season is set to close with a three games in 24 hours against Delmarva. The Power and Shorebirds have played each other 123 times since 2005 and West Virginia leads the all-time series 62-61. The Power hold a 40-31 mark at home against the Shorebirds. West Virginia will open the second half on June 19 at Lakewood as part of a seven game road trip that also takes them to Salisbury to play Delmarva.
DOUBLE DIPPERS: West Virginia and Delmarva will play twice today to make-up Thursday's postponed game. The Power have split each of four twinbills they have played this season while the Shorebirds have played four-and-a-half and are 7-2 on doubleheader dates this season. The 'Birds were slated to play two seven inning games on April 16, but went 15 innings in game one against Hagerstown, so game two was rescheduled.
RAMIREZ STILL STREAKING: Harold Ramirez extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games with a pair of base hits Wednesday night. Ramirez's current streak is his longest this year and the outfielder has reached safely with at least one base hit in 25 of his 33 games.
MORE FLORIDA STARS: Josh Bell and Orlando Castro were named as Florida State League All-Stars when the initial rosters were announced on June 3. The league has added former Power and current Marauders reliever Bryton Trepagnier to the South Division squad. Trepagnier is 3-0 with a 1.86 earned run average. Former West Virginia infielder Dilson Herrera also made the squad, starting at second base for the South Division in the game scheduled for tomorrow night at Bradenton's McKechnie Field.
JUNE SWOON: West Virginia is winless in ten games this month. Power hitters have a .226 average while the staff has a 6.10 ERA since the month began. The club went 9-17 in April with a .254 batting average and an ERA of 3.75. In May, West Virginia went 10-18 with a .260 and a 4.03 earned run average.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 28: West Virginia will host Lakewood and The ZOOperstars Gates open at six and the gates open at seven. The inflatable characters will entertain fans through the course of the game.
POWER POINTS: Reese McGuire and Erich Weiss have been selected for to play in the 55th South Atlantic League All-Star Game on June 17 at Hickory's L.P. Frans Stadium. Both players were selected as reserves... Jared Lakind has yet to appear in a game that the Power have won this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh blew a four-run lead in the ninth at Miami, but rallied to beat the Marlins 8-6 in 13 innings. Gregory Polanco went 5-7 with his first professional home run to lead the Pirates... Indianapolis lost 2-1 in ten innings to DurhamNick Kingham went seven scoreless in his Triple-A debut... Altoona beat Reading 5-4 in a walk-off. The Curve won it on a sac bunt and a throwing error... Bradenton is idle during the FSL All-Star break... Jamestown lost 10-9 to Mahoning Valley in its season opener.
