Braves' Watts Too Much as Tourists Fall 4-2
June 14, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC-- Saturday night at McCormick Field belonged to the Rome Braves starter Daniel Watts. The right-hander kept Asheville's offense quiet for seven innings which helped give the Braves their first win of this series. The Tourists did make it interesting but in the end fell 4-2 and snapped their five-game home win streak in the process.
Konner Wade started for Asheville and pitched well despite suffering the loss. In the top of the first inning, Wade induced four ground balls but the Braves still managed to score a run. In the third, Blake Brown made it a 2-0 game with a solo Home Run to left field.
The game remained 2-0 as the middle innings flew by. Watts retired 15 hitters in a row from the second inning through the sixth. In Rome's half of the sixth, Victor Caratini left the yard to make it 3-0 and the Braves added another when Carlos Franco singled home Jake Schrader on a ball that was lost in the sun.
Michael Benjamin did his best to swing the Tourists back in the game. Leading off the seventh inning, Benjamin homered to deep left-center. Asheville ended up putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Watts struck out Jose Briceno to end the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Benjamin again led off with a Home Run to left-center. Raimel Tapia followed with a single but Ryan McMahon grounded into a double play. After Correlle Prime walked to once again bring the tying run to the plate, Jordan Patterson hit a ground ball that ended up being the final out of the game.
Asheville wraps up the first half of the season on Sunday afternoon before the league will take three days off for the All Star Break. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.
