Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (43-26) mustered just one run on four hits on Saturday, losing 3-1 to the Greenville Drive (34-34) at Municipal Stadium. It's the fourth loss in-a-row for Hagerstown, meaning the Suns are now tied with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (43-26) atop the South Atlantic League's first half Northern Division standings with one game left for each team in the half and Greensboro controlling the tie-breaker.
The Drive took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a solo homerun off the bat of 3B Carlos Asuaje. It was his eighth homerun of the season, and the second homerun hit by the Drive in the series.
The 1-0 lead remained until the top of the sixth, when Greenville scored its final pair of runs. Right fielder Forrest Allday began the inning by reaching on a bunt single. Shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin then hit a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by LHP Justin Thomas. Thomas attempted to throw out Allday at second but his throw sailed into center field, allowing Allday to advance to third. First baseman Jantzen Witte brought Allday home with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. A two-out line drive single by Manuel Margot drove in Lin from second for the other run in the frame.
The lone Hagerstown run crossed the plate in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs DH Jimmy Yezzo delivered an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to two. However, the rally would stall after that as the next batter, 2B Brennan Middleton, popped out to Witte in foul territory.
Starting RHP Lucas Giolito (2-1) suffered the hard luck loss for the Suns. He pitched five innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out three. Starting RHP Joe Gunkel (3-0) earned the win for Greenville. He threw six scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk while striking out six. RHP Taylor Grover pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Drive to record his first save of the year.
These two teams conclude their four-game series at Municipal Stadium, as well as the first half of the season, on Sunday June 15. The Suns will send RHP Austin Voth (4-3) to the mound for his 12th start and appearance of the year. He will square off against LHP Trey Ball (1-5) for Greenville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm.
