Hickory Crawdads News Release

Lakewood, NJ - One night after having their franchise record 12 game winning streak snapped, the Hickory Crawdads bounced right back in the win column Friday evening with an 8-6, 10-inning victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park.

Following a 1:32 rain delay and more than three hours of game time, the winning runs came around on a two-run home run in the 10th by Crawdads catcher Kellin Deglan off of Lakewood All-Star closer Cody Forsythe. The come-from-behind victory is the 'Dads 13th over the last 14 games, and pushes their record over their past 34 games to 25-9.

The 'Dads entered the 8th inning of the game with a 5-4 lead, before the 'Claws rallied for two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the frame to take their first lead of the night at 6-5. Down, but not out, Crawdads shortstop Michael De Leon responded with a triple off of Forsythe to start the 9th inning before Nomar Mazara brought him in on a RBI groundout to tie the game at 6-6. Fast forward to the 10th, and Deglan followed up a leadoff single by Travis Demeritte with his 2-run blast to right for the Crawdads 8-6 lead.

Prior to the late heroics, Hickory built a 5-4 advantage with two runs in the 1st and three in the 5th. The 1st inning tallies came around on a 2-out, 2-RBI double off the left field wall by Ryan Cordell to give the Crawdads a 2-0 lead. The advantage held until the 3rd when rehabbing Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Cody Asche roped a 2-run homer to right to tie the score at 2-2.

The 'Dads retook the lead with a big fly of their own in the top of the 5th, when Mazara clubbed a 3-run shot to center field for his 9th homer of the year and a 5-2 Hickory advantage. The BlueClaws responded in kind in the bottom of the frame, as Asche came through with another 2-run blast to right to cut the score to 5-4.

The 5-4 score stayed the same until the 8th, when Lakewood rallied for their two runs to start the late-inning drama.

Deglan finished the game 2-4 with a homer, two RBI and a walk, while Mazara went 1-3 with a home run, 4 RBI, two walks and two runs scored.

Hickory reliever Jose Valdespina (1-0) earned the win with one unearned run allowed over two innings pitched. Forsythe (3-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits over two frames. Crawdads All-Star closer Cody Kendall (3) earned the save with a perfect 10th inning including two strikeouts.

The Crawdads (39-28) and BlueClaws (27-40) will match up again Saturday night at 7:05 pm for game three of their four-game series to end the first half of the season.
