Game #66 (of 137)

RH Thad Lowry (2-3, 4.35) vs. RH Ryan Newell (6-4, 2.48)

Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) send right-hander Thad Lowry to the mound on the heels of consecutive wins to face the red-hot Grasshoppers (A, Marlins), which have won a season-high eight straight games entering today's game. Greensboro is now just 1.0 game back of the first place Hagerstown Suns with two days left in the South Atlantic League Northern Division First Half, but the Suns can still clinch with any combination of two Grasshoppers losses and Suns wins. Kannapolis will try to play spoiler while looking for revenge after allowing two late runs to suffer a 2-1 loss on Friday.

Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his sixth start of the season and his third at home after winning back-to-back games for the first time in his career. He is coming off of a pair of 5.0-inning starts, matching his season-high, going 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA (1 ER/10 IP) in June compared to 0-3 with a 7.59 ERA (9 ER/10.2 IP) in three starts in May. Lowry spun a complete-game 5-inning no-hitter in a rain-shortened game at West Virginia on June 3, the first complete game no-no by an Intimidator June 10, 2003, when Brian Miller no-hit the Greensboro Bats (7 innings). He made his pro debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). Lowry began last season in the bullpen, going 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in eight games before moving into the rotation and going 2-3 with a 5.18 ERA in seven starts. He struck out a career-high five in a relief appearance on July 9 against Danville. The Sox selected Lowry in the fifth round of the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft. He is one of five Sally Leaguers with a CG shutout this year.

Hoppers Hurler: Ryan Newell, who turns 23 next week, makes his team-leading 14th start and 10th on the road. He is coming off consecutive road wins and is undefeated in his last five starts, including a complete-game shutout at Lakewood on June 4, spinning 7.0 strong innings in the first game of a twin bill. Newell ranks second in innings pitched (76.1), second in WHIP (1.03), and sixth in ERA (2.48). Among starters, Newell leads the SAL in fewest baserunners/9 IP ratio (9.43) and fifth in lowest batting average (.221). Newell fanned a career-high-tying 10 batters in his second start of the year on April 10 at Delmarva. The right-hander has flourished on the road, going 6-1 with a 1.63 ERA (10 ER/55.1 IP) in nine starts compared to 0-3 with a 4.71 ERA (11 ER/21 IP) on four starts at NewBridge Bank Park. The Marlins drafted Newell in the seventh round in June 2012 out of University of South Carolina-Upstate.

About Last Night: Greensboro scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings to turn an early 1-0 deficit into a late 2-1 lead, which held up against Kannapolis on Friday. The Intimidators committed a pair of errors, one in each inning, that helped both runs score off starter James Dykstra, who spun 7.1 innings in the loss. Yefri Perez's single with one out in the eighth chased Dykstra from the game and drove in Chad Wallach to claim the Hoppers first lead of the night. Cody Crabaugh spun 6.1 innings but took no decision as Esmerling De La Rosa worked 1 and 2/3 innings for the win. Tyler Kinley spun a frame for the save (2). Kannapolis scored its lone run on an Omar Narvaez bases-loaded single in the first inning.

Ski Streaks:Trey Michalczewski doubled on Friday night, going 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest-active hitting streak in the league and sixth-longest overall this season. The 19-year-old third baseman is now batting .362 (21-58) with 13 extra-base hits during the stretch (four home runs, eight doubles, and a triple) with 15 RBI. He has reached base safely in a 18 straight games.

Dykstra Dealin': James Dykstra became the first Intimidators starter to work into the 8th inning this season, spinning 7.1 innings on Friday against the Grasshoppers and allowing two unearned runs. He is the first Intimidators pitcher to work into the eighth inning since Brandon Brennan worked 8.0 frames against Savannah on June 1, 2013. Dykstra also notched a quality start (6 IP or more, 3 ER or less) for the fifth time this season, tying Tyler Danish for the team lead.

Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Hunter Jones went 0-4 with a strikeout on Friday, ending his career-high on-base streak of 19 straight games. The Intimidators centerfielder reached base safely in every game from May 23 through June 12. During the streak, Jones hit .292 (21-72) with all four of his career home runs and 11 RBI with an on-base percentage of .393. Jones's father Tracy played in the Major Leagues from 1986-91, including three seasons for Pete Rose and the Cincinnati Reds.

Close Calls: The Intimidators are now 11-10 in one-run games this season, tied for the 4th-most one-run games in the SAL this season (West Virginia 7-16, Rome 13-11, and Augusta 11-12). Kannapolis and Greensboro are both 11-10 in squeakers this season.

Kiser Rolls: Outfielder Kale Kiser tripled twice on Thursday, including a 2-run triple in the ninth inning. His two-triple game is the first by an Intimidators player since Keenyn Walker accomplished the feat on July 1, 2012. Kiser now has four triples on the season, tied for eighth in the SAL, and all four have come in the month of June. As a result, Kiser is tied for the Minor Leagues lead, along with Delmarva's Mike Yastrzemski and Lynchburg's Jose Peraza, in triples this month.
