Riddle Tough to Solve, Drives in 3 for Hoppers

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Greensboro J.T. Riddle drove in three runs to pace the Grasshoppers in a 4-2 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators in front of 3,548 fans on Saturday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. As a result of Greensboro's ninth straight win and tonight's loss by Hagerstown to Greenville, the Grasshoppers can win the South Atlantic League Northern Division First Half with a victory tomorrow in Kannapolis.

Yefri Perez led off the game with a double, and Riddle followed with a base hit for a 1-0 lead. Riddle added an RBI-double in the third inning then came home on a Felix Munoz fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead. He finished the night 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, including a seventh-inning single to plate Perez for a 4-1 lead.

Hoppers starter Ryan Newell worked into the eighth inning, striking out eight batters over 7 and 2/3 innings while allowing two runs on nine hits to earn the win (7-4). Sean Donatello worked a scoreless ninth innings for the save (10).

Kannapolis got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Christian Stringer led off with a double and moved to third on a T.J. Williams base hit before Tyler Shryock singled to plate Stringer. Shyrock singled again in the seventh and scored on a Cleuluis Rondon 2-out double to pull Kannapolis back within two, 4-2.

Thad Lowry (2-4) worked a season-high 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one while being saddled with a loss.

Trey Michalczewski extended his career-best hitting streak to 17 straight games on a first-inning single, the longest active streak in the South Atlantic League.

Greensboro and Hagerstown are both 43-26 atop the Northern Division, however the Grasshoppers took three of four games against the Suns during the first half of the season, giving them the head-to-head tie-breaker.

Sunday's series finale begins at 2:05 p.m., and fans are invited to play catch on the field with dad to celebration Father's Day before the game (1:20 - 1:40 p.m.). Sunday's game is also Kid's Splash Day with various water-based attraction throughout the game, and the first 300 fans receiving complimentary admission to the Splash Pad in Kannapolis. Every Sunday with the Intimidators is Kid's Day presented by Cornerstone Church featuring pre-game player autographs and post-game kids run the bases.
