Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - In a game that featured 14 combined runs, 21 hits and five errors, the Worcester Red Sox (31-32) fell to the Toledo Mud Hens (32-29) by a final score of 10-4 on Thursday night at Polar Park.
Toledo set the tone early with a five-run second inning against WooSox starter Thomas Pannone. After a single, Trayce Thompson hit a moonshot home run to center to make it 2-0. A trio of singles followed, loading the bases with one out for Derek Hill, who brought a run home on a fielder's choice. The next batter, Brendon Davis cracked an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Worcester got one back in the third on an RBI single from Connor Wong, but the Mud Hens' offense was too much. Toledo plated two in the third on a solo homer by Josh Lester and a run-scoring error, then added three in the fourth on a three-run jack by Lester.
Johan Mieses clobbered a solo shot of his own in the fourth, a 414-foot homer to left that landed below the scoreboard. In 18 games this season, Mieses has six home runs.
An inning later, Jeter Downs socked his 11th long ball of the year, a two-run job that went 410 feet to cut the deficit to 10-4.
On the mound, Geoff Hartlieb, Eduard Bazardo and Kaleb Ort combined for four scoreless frames to close the game-Ort was particularly dominant, striking out the side in the ninth.
Defensively, the WooSox committed a season-high four errors.
The WooSox continue the series Friday at 6:45 p.m. against the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. On the mound, Brian Keller (1-2, 4.66) faces Nivaldo Rodriguez (3-3, 5.20). Radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is on NESN+ tape delay.
