Wong Goes Deep in Comeback Win at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Worcester Red Sox (60-59) erased an early deficit to beat the Syracuse Mets (51-69) on Wednesday night, a 6-4 victory at NBT Bank Stadium to even the series in upstate New York.

Syracuse jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, plating runs on back-to-back home runs from Daniel Palka and Travis Blankenhorn.

The WooSox did not score until the fourth, but would rally for six runs in three innings. Johan Mieses got the Worcester scoring started on an RBI double in the fourth.

Enmanuel Valdez made it 3-2 in the fifth, driving home Cam Cannon on an RBI groundout-two batters later, the WooSox took the lead after a throwing error by Syracuse second baseman Gosuke Katoh.

In the sixth, Christin Stewart smashed a solo home run to left for a key insurance run, his 19th of the season. Nick Sogard then doubled, and after a sac bunt, came home on a Connor Wong RBI two-bagger.

Wong finished with a three-hit night and delivered his eighth RBI since the start of August.

Worcester starter Connor Seabold ultimately went five innings, allowing four earned, three of which came in that first inning. He struck out four and walked two, allowing one run in the fifth on a Mark Vientos RBI single.

Following Seabold, Eduard Bazardo, Zack Kelly and Kaleb Ort combined to hold Syracuse scoreless. Ort notched his 16th save of the season, a mark that ranks third-best in the International League.

The WooSox continue the six-game road series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. against the Syracuse Mets. On the mound, Victor Santos (0-3, 14.34) faces Harol Gonzalez (0-1, 47.25). Radio coverage is live at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
