Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Bulls first baseman Jonathan Aranda homered to extend his hit streak to fourteen games, second baseman Xavier Edwards recorded two hits and center fielder Josh Lowe drew four walks as Durham defeated the Nashville Sounds 7-5 on Thursday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The win plus Lehigh Valley's loss to Gwinnett means the Bulls are back in sole possession of first place in the International League East Division.
After Durham went ahead via C Joe Hudson's bases-loaded walk in the second, Nashville answered with a two-spot in the top of the third to go up 2-1. The Bulls, however, countered right back with a trio of tallies in the last of the third, highlighted by Aranda's go-ahead two-run blast to right, with 3B Tristan Gray adding an RBI single to make it 4-2. The Sounds responded with a two-run fourth to even the contest, yet Durham went back ahead with a single tally in the fifth. After Nashville once again tied the game with another run in the sixth, the Bulls pulled ahead for good when Lowe drew his fourth base on balls of the game with the bases full before SS Vidal Brujan scored on a wild pitch.
Edwards (2-5, R) was the lone Durham hitter to record a multi-hit effort in the victory, while Lowe (0-1, R, RBI, 4 BB) reached base four times, all via walks. Aranda's home run extended his hit streak to 14 games, the longest by a Bulls player this year. Since the stretch began on August 9 he owns a .386 average (22-57), adding nine runs, three runs, three homers and 19 RBI. Aranda has also driven in at least one run in nine of his last ten contests going back to August 13.
Durham reliever Jimmy Yacabonis (1.0 IP, SO) earned the win in his Durham debut, while southpaw Garrett Cleavinger (1.0 IP, SO) notched his second save. Nashville righty J.C. Mejia (0.2 IP, H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, SO) suffered the defeat.
The two teams are set to meet again on Friday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. The Bulls' starting pitcher has not yet been announced, while the Sounds are expected to send RHP Dylan File to the hill.
