Wolves sign NHL goalie Shields

The Chicago Wolves have signed nine-year National Hockey League goaltending veteran STEVE SHIELDS. In addition, the Atlanta Thrashers have reassigned goaltender ADAM BERKHOEL (BUHRK-uhl) and the Wolves have released netminder KEVIN REITER (WRITER).

The 33-year-old SHIELDS has recorded a 79-102-39 mark with a 2.64 goals against average and a .912 save percentage in 241 career NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres (1995-1998), San Jose Sharks (1998-2001), Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (2001-2002), Boston Bruins (2002-03) and Florida Panthers (2003-04). He also posted a 9-16 record with a 3.07 goals-against average in 25 NHL playoff games.

The Toronto native registered a 15-3 mark during the 1995-96 American Hockey League playoffs to help Rochester win the 1996 Calder Cup Championship and represented the Americans in the 1996-97 AHL All-Star Game. Overall, SHIELDS played parts of four seasons in the AHL with Rochester, notching a 37-32-4 record with a 3.48 goals-against average and an .890 save percentage in 80 games.

BERKHOEL made his NHL debut on Saturday with Atlanta, recording 24 saves on 29 shots in a 5-1 loss to the New York Rangers. The St. Paul, Minn., native ranks sixth in the AHL with a .939 save percentage (77 saves on 82 shots), which includes recording 40 saves on 42 shots to earn his first AHL win on Oct. 7 against the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. He has recorded a 1-1-0 mark and a 2.53 goals-against average in two games with the Wolves this year.

REITER, who was signed by the Wolves on Oct. 14, did not see any action with the team.
