Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins are coming off their first weekend of the 2005-06 season, after capturing their first win of the year in a 5-2 victory over the Portland Pirates on Saturday. The Bruins are 1-1-0-0 (2 points), putting them in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Head coach Scott Gordon's club has had key contributions from its special teams. The Bruin power play unit is seventh in the league with a 21.7% success rate (5/23), and the penalty kill unit held the Pirates to 1 for 12 on the power play in Saturday's victory, while scoring a short-handed goal. Defenseman Jonathan Sigalet leads the Bruins in power play goals with two and is tied for seventh in the league.
Bruin players Eric Healey, Michael Schutte and Eric Nickulas have gotten off to fast starts to the season. Healey, the 2002-03 AHL's leading goal scorer, has recorded points in each of the Bruins first two games. Healey scored Friday to tie the game at two and had a point on all three Bruins goals. Saturday he added two assists. Schutte scored the game-winning goal Saturday and recorded an assist to go along with his two assists Friday night. His four points is good enough for eighth best among AHL defensemen. Nickulas, a member of the 1999 Bruins Calder Cup team, scored the first goal in Friday night's game and added two assists. On Saturday the right wing also had an assist.
