BARONS OPEN 2005-06 SEASON
The Barons welcomed in a new season on Saturday, October 8th at the National City Rink located in the Q with a 4-1 loss to the Rochester Americans. The highlight of the game for the Barons was in the first period when Craig Valette scored to give the Barons an early 1-0 lead. Rookie Steve Bernier notched his first professional point with the assist on the goal. The Barons maintained the lead until the 14:21 mark of the second period when Rochester scored to tie the game at one. Rochester would proceed to score three more unanswered goals to seal the 4-1 win.
The Barons returcned to the ice again on Wednesday, October 12th for another home contest with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Although it was a night of firsts, the Griffins defeated the Barons 5-2. 2005-06 rookies Lukas Kaspar and Bernier provided the offensive spark with a goal apiece. The goals were both Kaspar and Bernier's first as professionals, but it proved not enough to outlast the Griffins. Also, a familiar face was back in the lineup as 2004-05 Barons Rookie of the Year, Josh Gorges returned to Cleveland opening the season with the San Jose Sharks.
The Barons headed north of the border for their first road trip of the season when they traveled to Toronto on Friday night, October 14th to take on the Marlies. In a game that totaled 54 penalty minutes (33 for Cleveland), Toronto scored three times on the power play to beat the Barons 3-2. The Barons goals were scored by Mike Iggulden in the second period and Grant Stevenson in the third. Bernier added an assist on Iggulden's goal for his third point in as many games. Despite the loss, goaltender Nolan Schaefer was tabbed as the #3 Star of the Game by turning down 30 of 33 Toronto shots.
The Barons quickly rebounded from the Toronto loss by returning home the following night to beat the Milwaukee Admirals 4-2 for their first win of the season. The rookies were at it again as Iggulden, Kaspar, and Bernier each contributed a goal. Iggulden added an assist on Bernier's goal earning him the #1 Star of the Game. With 0:32 remaining, the Barons sealed the win when Josh Gorges scored an empty net goal from just inside the red line. Barons attackers put pressure on Milwaukee goaltender Pekka Rinne all night as they totaled 41 shots in the contest.
The Barons will conclude the month of October with a four game road trip starting in Rochester next Friday night. The Barons will return home to National City Rink in The Q on Tuesday, November 1st when they take on the Hershey Bears at 7:05pm.
