September 12, 2023 - International League (IL)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings used a six-run second inning to beat Lehigh Valley in their series opener Tuesday night, 6-4. Four Wings pitchers combined to take a no-hitter through 7.1 innings, including 5.0 hitless innings from RHP Cory Abbott. C Brady Lindsly notched a hit and a run for the fifth straight game and is now hitting .471 (8-for-17) in September.
After a 58-minute rain delay, the Red Wings struck first in the bottom of the second inning. DH Jake Noll led off the inning with a double. 1B Frankie Tostado walked and LF Jack Dunn laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached first on a fielding error by Lehigh Valley pitcher Tyler Phillips to load the bases. 3B Erick Mejia hit an RBI infield single that drove in Noll to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Brady Lindsly singled to left field and brought home Tostado to make it a 2-0 game. SS Jeter Downs singled up the middle and drove in Dunn to make it 3-0.
Later in the inning, Mejia scored on a ground out by 2B Darren Baker to make it a 4-0 game, and CF Derek Hill brought in Lindsly on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0. The ninth batter of the inning, RF Blake Rutherford singled to right field and drove in Downs to give the Red Wings a 6-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth inning, when the IronPigs broke into the hit column after CF Matt Kroon logged an infield single. He moved to second after a single by C Rafael Marchan, and came around to score on a two-run double from 3B Esteban Quiroz which also scored Marchan to make it a 6-2 game.
In the top of the ninth inning, Matt Kroon cut the lead in half with an RBI infield single, his second hit and RBI of the game, that drove in 1B Darick Hall. Rafael Marchan made it a 6-4 game after driving in CF Simon Muzziotti on a sacrifice fly. 2B Jim Haley flew out to center field for the third out of the inning to give the Red Wings the 6-4 win.
RHP Cory Abbott made his 13th start for the Wings Tuesday night, taking a no-hitter through 5.0 innings, while striking out six. RHP Tanner Rainey threw 1.0 inning in relief allowing no runs, while striking out the side. LHP Tim Cate tossed a scoreless inning striking out one, and RHP Luis Reyes worked the eighth inning, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out three and walking one. RHP Gerson Moreno closed things out for the Wings allowing two earned runs on two hits while walking one and striking out one.
Tuesday night's Diamond Pro Player of the Game goes to starting pitcher RHP Cory Abbott. The San Diego native took a no-hitter through 5.0 full innings for the second time this season (4/28 vs. STP), while striking out six. In seven starts of at least 5.0 innings pitched this season, Abbott posts a 2.21 ERA (9 ER/36.2 IP) with 45 strikeouts.
Rochester looks to pick up their second-straight win against Lehigh Valley Wednesday night, in what would be the first time the Wings have logged two wins against the IronPigs to open a series since September of last year (9/13-14). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
