
Knights Fall in Opener to Sounds 5-3

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights began the second series of a two-week homestand against the Nashville Sounds at Truist Field with a 5-3 loss in the opener.
The game began as a pitchers' duel, with neither starting pitcher taking the loss or giving up more than two runs. RHP Cristian Mena got the start for the Knights, throwing 4.2 innings while striking out six batters and giving up one run on three hits and five walks.
RHP Mike Mayers was stuck with the loss for Charlotte after giving up two runs in two innings pitched in relief while allowing two hits and walking two.
Nashville got on the board in the second inning with an RBI single to go up 1-0.
Charlotte tied it up in the fifth inning when González had an RBI single, bringing home outfielder Yoelqui Céspedes to tie it 1-1. Infielder Nate Mondou brought home the leading run with a sacrifice fly to left field, getting home outfielder Tyler Neslony to go ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning.
The Sounds responded immediately in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer and a two-run RBI single to go ahead 5-2.
Mondou chipped into the Nashville lead with an RBI single, bringing infielder Xavier Fernández in to score to cut the lead down to 5-3 in the eighth inning
The Sounds closed the game with a perfect ninth inning, securing a 5-3 win.
The Knights will continue the six-game homestand on Wednesday against the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers). The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights," Matt Swierad, and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action. First pitch on Wednesday night is set for 6:35 p.m. from Truist Field.
