Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Rochester Red Wings picked up their first win of their series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, scoring a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth to come from behind to win, 5-3. Pennsylvania natives RF Travis Blankenhorn and 1B Matt Adams each homered, while RHP Daniel Mengden picked up his first win of 2023.

After a delayed start to the contest (32 minutes, rain), 1B Matt Adams, the Pennsylvania native, kicked off the scoring in the top of the second when he launched a solo shot to give the Wings a 1-0 lead. The homer was his 14th of the season, and team-leading 10th on the road. Scranton/WB answered in the third via a two-out, two-run double from C Austin Wells to push the RailRiders in front.

Neither team managed to cross the plate over the next two frames, until two-straight Scranton/WB batters drew walks, and DH Franchy Cordero extended the RailRiders' lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the sixth.

2B Luis Garcia led off the top of the eighth with his first double as a Wing this season, followed by a single by RF Travis Blankenhorn that put runners at the corner with no one out. DH Jacob Nottingham followed with a single that plated Garcia and cut the lead to one. Two batters later, C Drew Millas tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI groundout that scored Blankenhorn.

After holding the RailRiders scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, LF Darren Baker drew a walk, and followed it up with his 10th stolen base of the season. With two outs, Blankenhorn launched a two-run, go-ahead home run to give Rochester a 5-3 lead. The homer was his team-leading 17th of the season, and his first go-ahead home run in the ninth or later since 6/2/2019 with Double-A Pensacola. The Wings third on their two-week road-trip (. Scranton/WB went down on strikes in order in the bottom half, and the Wings picked up their first win of the series.

The go-ahead home run in the ninth was the Wings' third go-ahead or tying long ball during their two week road trip, with the other two coming on 7/27 and 7/29 in Worcester.

RHP Roddery Munoz made the start on the mound, his second with the Wings this season. The right-hander worked 4.0 innings, allowing two earned on four hits while striking out four and walking one. This tied his longest start of 2023, his other coming on 4/7 with Double-A Mississippi (ATL). LHP Anthony Banda and RHP Gerson Moreno covered the following 3.0 innings in relief, combining to allow one earned on two hits while striking out and walking three. RHP Daniel Mengden took the ball in the eight and logged two perfect innings while striking out the side in order in the ninth to earn the win, his first since 9/3/2022 with Omaha.

Friday night's Diamond Pro Player of the Game award goes to RF Travis Blankenhorn. The lefty went 3-for-5 with a game-winning home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. The performance was his third three-hit game of the season, and first since 5/10 against Worcester.

Rochester returns to the field tomorrow night, looking to log their second consecutive win at PNC Field for the second time this season. RHP Wily Peralta is slated to make his 20th start this season, his most since 2016. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
