Sioux City Explorers News Release

WICHITA, KS -- Wichita's pitchers set a new American Association record, walking 15 batters and the Explorers took advantage as Walter Young had 3 more RBI for Sioux City and the X's beat the Nuts 8-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium Monday night.

Wingnut starter David Cross went 4 innings and walked 7 men, just 1 off a league record. The rookie walked the bases loaded in the 2nd inning and Enohel Polanco drove in 1 run with a RBI infield single. Young then drove in 2 with a sharp single to right and the X's had a 3-0 lead.

Wichita got one run back in the bottom of the 2nd on a throwing error by Chris Grossman allowing Vic Davilla to score but Juan Camacho homered to lead off the 3rd off of Cross to make it 4-1 Sioux City.

Tim Layden, going on just 3 days rest, pitched well until he ran out of gas in the 5th, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, with an error by Camacho bringing in 1 of those runs and Wichita came storming back to tie the game at 4-4. The Wingnuts took the lead in the 6th off of Nick Singleton, pitching in relief for the first time this year, on a RBI double by Brenan Herrera. It was 5-4 Wichita.

The X's rallied in the 7th, thanks again to the bases on balls. Nick McCoola started the inning with a double off of Wichita reliever Blake Gailen. Then, instead of bunting like the defense thought, Derek Schermerhorn ripped a triple to the alley in right scoring McCoola to tie the game at 5-5. Then Gailen would walk Dustin Jones and Jason Tuttle to load the bases. Polanco would bounce into a fielders choice as Schermerhorn was thrown out at the plate for out number one. On the play, Schermerhorn tried to knock the ball from cather Felipe Del Rosario and collided with the backstopper but Del Rosario had to be carted off the field. When the game resumed, Young got a fly ball deep enough in left to score Jones to give the X's a 6-5 lead. Chris Grossman then drilled a RBI single to make it 7-5 Sioux City.

Ty Marotz would come and shut down the Wingnuts, retiring all 6 batters he faced, shutting down Wichita in the 7th and 8th innings. Sioux City would get an insurance run in the 9th on a dropped pop up by Byron Embry. Brett Reid gave up a leadoff single in the 9th but a double play erased that and Vic Davilla lined out to end the game and Sioux City had their 2nd win in a row.

Singleton got the win in relief, improving to 7-4. Gailen took the loss, falling to 1-1. Reid got his 16th save.

While the Wingnuts set a league record for walks, the X's tied a league record by stranding 18 men on base. Jason Tuttle tied a league record, walking 4 times in 1 game. Young went 2-3 with 2 walks and 3 RBI and now has 12 RBI in 3 games for the Explorers.

Sioux City will now go for the sweep on Tuesday night and will send Alexander Francisco (8-1) to the mound while Wichita will counter with Gustavo Mata (3-6). Game time is 7:05 with coverage on 1360 KSCJ and xsbaseball.com.
