Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - Lincoln Saltdogs pitcher Jarrett Gardner was named on Monday as the American Association Pitcher of the Week. Gardner becomes the first Lincoln pitcher to earn the honor this year, and the third Saltdog overall to pick up a player of the week award in 2008.

Jarrett tossed a complete-game shutout on Wednesday of last week, his second of the season, in a win at Shreveport. The right-hander from Oklahoma allowed just four hits and no walks, striking out eight Sports hitters and improving his record to 8-8 on the season.

"Gardy's really dominated this league this month," said Lincoln pitching coach and acting manager Jim Haller. "He really could have won this award two or three weeks in a row, as well as he's pitched. Having Jarrett pitching well at the front of the rotation is a big part of why we've been so successful."

Gardner is 5-0 over his last five starts, with three complete games and two shutouts. His ERA is 1.18 over that stretch, with only three walks and 27 hits allowed in the five games. Gardner will take the mound tonight in El Paso for his final start this month.

Jarrett joins infielder Eduardo Rios and catcher Shawn McGill as Saltdogs who have won player of the week honors in 2008. Rios earned Hitter of the Week honors after the first weekend in June, while McGill was honored for his efforts in the third week of July.

The Saltdogs take on El Paso tonight and tomorrow night, in the final two games of a seven-game road trip through the South Division. Lincoln is 3-2 so far on the trip, and enters play tonight with a 1.5 game lead over Sioux City in the American Association North.

The Saltdogs' next homestand begins on July 31. For team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
