Diablos blanked by 'Dogs

Jarrett Gardner threw his second complete game shut-out in a row as the Lincoln Salt Dogs blanked the El Paso Diablos 5-0 on Monday night from Cohen Stadium.

The Saltdogs struck first in the top of the first inning. Matt Maloney hammered a two-run homer over the left field wall for the 2-0 lead. Adam Blackley was ejected from the game with two outs in the first after he hit two batters by pitch. Derek Bennett came into the game as the new pitcher.

Lincoln made it 3-0 in the top of the second. Matt Maloney had his third RBI of the contest, with a single through the right side.

The Saltdogs added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Skip Adams plated Omar Bramasco on a single for the 4-0 advantage. Lincoln took a five run lead in the top of the sixth inning. With one out Matt Maloney ripped a single through the left side which Alex Derhak bobbled for an error and it allowed Omar Bramasco to score.

Jarrett Gardner (9-3) threw nine shut-out innings allowing only four base hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Adam Blackley (6-6) takes the loss. He threw two thirds of an inning allowing two runs off of two hits with no walks and no strikeouts.

The Diablos remain one and a half games out of first place at the mid-way point of the second half of the season. The Fort Worth Cats are now in a second-place tie with El Paso.

The Diablos and Saltdogs will close out their three game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM from Cohen Stadium. Josh Neitz takes the mound against Jason Jarvis for Lincoln. The game will be carried live on www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
