Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans (7-17) greeted the Grand Prairie Airhogs (17-7) with 15 hits in a 9-3 win Monday night in the series opener. The offense jumped all over Airhogs spot starter Matt Righter, putting up seven runs in the first three innings. Pelican's starter Zach Cline would hold off the Airhogs as he would pitch six strong innings to pick up his third win of the season.

The Pelicans would scrap together a couple of hits in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 1-0 lead. With two down and runners on first and second, Francisco Leandro singled down the right field line to score Cesar Aranguren who singled earlier in the inning.

The offense for the Pels would pick up right where they left off in the last inning as they would send 10 batters to the plate in third. The first three batters of the inning all singled to load up the bases for Jack Joffrion. A wild pitch from Airhogs starter Matt Righter would bring in Rafael Alvarez. Joffrion would then single up the middle to bring home Brandon Sing. With two down, Dylan Parzyk would add an RBI single down the left field line. Following the single from Leandro, Matt Pali drove a double down into the right field corner to score Parzyk and Leandro. In the inning, the Pelican offense exploded for six runs on eight hits to make it 7-0.

On the night, Francisco Leandro went 4-for-5 with an RBI.

The Pels would tack on two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alvarez led off the inning with a solo homerun, his 16th of the season. Back to back errors by Airhogs shortstop David Espinosa led to another run for the Pelicans as they would take a commanding 9-0 lead.

Zach Cine would surrender a run on consecutive doubles to start the top half of the seventh before giving way to Pels reliever, Robert Paulk. With one away in the inning, Alvarez would commit an error in right which allowed J.B. Tucker to score. David Espinosa would extend the inning by reaching base on a fielders' choice which brought home Mike Conroy for the third and final run of the inning.

Tomorrow night the Pelicans will send John Webb to the mound in game two of the three game series.
