MANCHESTER, NH - Jordan Weal scored in overtime as the Monarchs beat Providence, 2-1 on LA Kings Night at the Verizon Wireless Arena Saturday.
The Monarchs (26-9-3-2) jumped back into first place in the Eastern Conference with the win, beating the Bruins (18-16-5-1) for the fourth time this season.
"I thought we played well," Head Coach Mike Stothers said. "I thought our fore check was great. [We had] hard hits, heavy hits. It was a good effort"
Josh Gratton opened the scoring at 17:39 in the first period, converting after a takeaway by Paul Bissonnette in the Bruins' zone. The tic-tac-toe pass started with Ryan Horvat, and ended with Gratton scoring his third goal of the season.
Brian Ferlin brought the Bruins even when he beat Patrik Bartosak at 15:40 in the second period off a feed from Justin Florek.
After a scoreless third period, Jordan Weal ended the game 2:29 into overtime on the power play. Weal took a pass from Kevin Gravel in the faceoff circle, drove to the net, and stuffed home his 12th goal of the season.
Bartosak finished the game with 21 saves, stopping three breakaways, including one in overtime.
The Monarchs are back in action tomorrow afternoon at home, as they take on Worcester for the third time this week at 3:00 p.m.
Notes:
* Josh Gratton's goal marks his first tally against a team other than Portland this season. * The Monarchs wore throwback purple LA Kings jerseys tonight, but switched to their traditional home white jerseys after the first period. * Paul Bissonnette's assist gave him points in each of his last two games. It marked the first time he tallied points in consecutive games since October 11-13, 2013 with the Coyotes. * The Monarchs improved to 10-0-0-0 when leading after the first period at home this season.
