Providence Bruins News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Jordan Weal scored the game-winner 2:29 into overtime as the Providence Bruins lost to the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 Saturday night at Verizon Wireless Arena. It was the second straight game Providence went to OT.
The contest was the first of the year for Ben Sexton, who had a wrist injury in an exhibition game between the Bruins and Springfield Falcons at the Dunk. He had one shot in his return to the lineup and got some ice time on the penalty kill.
In the opening frame, the Bruins had more quality scoring chances, including a shorthanded breakaway for Andrew Cherniwchan, but Manchester had the only goal. Josh Gratton recorded his third goal of the year on a rebound supplied by NHL vet Paul Bissonette at 17:39.
Providence scored the only goal of the middle period, sandwiched in-between two other top-notch scoring chances. Seth Griffith and Colin Stuart played catch during a 2-on-none, but Griffith hit the post with a backhand. At 15:40, Brian Ferlin scored his second goal of the weekend to tie the game at 1. His wrister past Patrik Bartosak came with some help from Justin Florek and Cherniwchan.
The Bruins also had a 3-on-1 rush with Alexander Khokhlachev holding the puck, and Stuart drew a penalty, but missed, and the team couldn't capitalize on the power play. (Providence was 0-for-4 on the man advantage and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.)
Only seconds into overtime, Khokhlachev forced a turnover and had a great opportunity in front, but Bartosak made the glove save. Stuart committed an interference minor to try to prevent a Monarchs chance at 1:41, and Weal made him pay less than a minute later. Subban made the initial save, but Weal's shot on the rebound went off the post, then the crossbar, then into the back of the net.
The Bruins' next game is at home on Sunday at 3:05pm against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
PROVIDENCE SCORING:
#19 Brian Ferlin (#18 Justin Florek, #39 Andrew Cherniwchan)
PROVIDENCE GOALTENDING:
#47 Malcolm Subban (20 saves on 22 shots)
