Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester goaltender Troy Grosenick made 25 saves to pick up his first shutout of the season and help lead the Sharks to a 4-0 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The loss extended the Penguins' winless streak to five games.
An evenly-matched first period saw the Sharks burst forth for three goals in the final eight minutes before the intermission. A failed outlet pass by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was collected by Daniil Tarasov, who was able to walk free into the slot before tucking a forehand inside the left post to make it 1-0 for Worcester at 12:11.
Less than three minutes later, Freddie Hamilton drove down the left wing and fired a wrist shot through a screen that sneaked under the glove of Penguins goalie Jeff Zatkoff to double the Sharks' lead.
With Worcester on the power play late in the first, former Penguin Bryan Lerg put his new team up, 3-0, with 28.3 seconds remaining in the period when he swatted in the bouncing rebound from a Matt Taormina point shot. Matt Murray would come into the game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at the start of the second in relief of Zatkoff.
The Sharks added to their lead at 14:38 of the middle frame, just after their second man-advantage of the game expired. From the top of the left circle, Evan Trupp sent a pass across the hashmarks that found defenseman Taylor Fedun pinching down from the blueline for a one-timer past the skate of Murray.
Grosenick stopped all seven shots he saw in the third to preserve the shutout bid. Zatkoff took the loss and fell to 11-9-2 on the season with five saves on eight shots in the first period. Murray turned aside 9-of-10 over the remaining forty minutes.
The Penguins wrap up their weekend on Sunday, Jan. 18 with a 3:05 p.m. faceoff against the Providence Bruins. Tune in on WILK Newsradio or watch online at AHL Live.
