Rochester Americans News Release
(San Antonio, TX) The Rochester Americans allowed three unanswered goals in the second period before eventually faltering to the San Antonio Rampage 5-3 Saturday night at the AT&T Center. The Amerks complete their trip through the state of Texas with a 1-1 record and see their overall record fall to 16-23-1-0.
Mikhail Grigorenko scored twice for the Amerks to bring his season total to 10, while Zac Dalpe also added a goal in his return to the lineup following a brief one-game call-up with the parent Buffalo Sabres. Matt Hackett made his second start of the season in net, and made 23 saves as he remains winless so far this year.
Andrew Yogan, Bobby Butler, Ryan Martindale, Connor Brickley and Mark Mancari all scored for San Antonio. Dan Ellis was in between the pipes for the Rampage, and stopped 30 of the 33 shots thrown his way to earn the win.
The Rampage scored on just their second shot of the game 7:07 into the first period when Yogan finished a rebound after Wade Megan's try was denied by a sprawling Hackett.
After out-shooting San Antonio the entire first period, the Amerks were finally rewarded when Grigorenko collected a stretch pass from Brady Austin, pumped the breaks in front of the net and slid the puck past Ellis to tie the score 1-1.
The opening minutes of the second period were filled with penalties from both sides, but neither club could take advantage of the open ice. When the even-strength play commenced, Jake McCabe dumped a puck up ice to Dalpe, who cruised into the San Antonio zone and flipped a back-hand shot over Ellis' shoulder to put the Amerks ahead 2-1 at the 7:56 mark of the middle frame.
San Antonio regained the lead in a flurry with two goals just 1:28 apart in the second period, with Butler converting a rebound directly after a face-off win to tie the score 2-2. Mancari, the former Amerk, would torment his old club shortly thereafter, tipping in Corban Knight's shot to put the Rampage ahead 3-2 with 6:28 left in the second stanza.
Brickley continued San Antonio's second-period surge after swinging a loose puck in front past Hackett with under two minutes left in the period.
Early in the third period, the Rampage converted their fourth consecutive goal when Martindale skated through the slot and deflected Jonathan Racine's shot over Hackett's shoulder to bring the score to 5-2.
The Amerks bounced back and ended San Antonio's scoring run 4:13 later when Jerry D'Amigo fed Grigorenko for a back-hand conversion to bring Rochester within two goals. With his second of the night, Grigorenko now has five points over his last two games, including three goals.
Looking for a late-game surge of its own, Rochester pulled Hackett with 3:16 left in regulation, but failed to cut into San Antonio's lead any further.
The Amerks wrap up their West Division swing on Sunday, Jan. 18 when they face-off against the league-leading Oklahoma City Barons in a 5:00 p.m. tilt at the Cox Convention Center. The matchup will be the second and final meeting between the two teams this season and will be carried live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester. The Amerks need a win to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Barons, who used a 28-save shutout from Richard Bachman and escaped town with a 2-0 win in the teams' prior get-together back on Jan. 10.
