Monsters Fall in Iowa, 4-1
January 17, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Kenny Ryan spoiled the shutout bid of Iowa goalie Kenny Ryan with one second left, but the Lake Erie Monsters (16-16-2-3) were unable to muster any more than that on Saturday night as they fell 4-1 to the Iowa Wild (14-23-1-1) at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Ryan scored the lone goal for the Monsters, who are 2-2-0-0 on their current five-game road swing. The Monsters and Iowa meet again Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern, with both teams playing for the third time in three days.
Danny Syvret gave Iowa a 1-0 lead at 15:02 of the first period with a long shot that deflected off Monsters goalie Reto Berra and into the net. Iowa took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Iowa extended their lead to 2-0 when Michael Keranen took the puck around the net and centered a backhand to the front of the Monsters net. Keranen's pass deflected off a Monsters skate and over the goal line at 12:53 of the second period. Brad Richard scored on a one-timer from the right point, through traffic, at 17:11 of the second period to grow the Iowa lead to 3-0.
Stu Bickel scored on a slap shot from the right circle to give Iowa a 4-0 lead at 2:03 of the third period. The Monsters scored their only goal of the game with one second remaining in the third period when Kenny Ryan sent a puck to the front of the net that found its way past Curry. Ryan's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Mitchell Heard and Bruno Gervais.
Reto Berra stopped 24 of 28 shots in net for the Monsters; he is now 1-1-0. Curry stopped 24 of 25 Monsters shots to improve to 7-7-0 on the campaign.
The Monsters and Wild meet again Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. The game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
