Manchester Monarchs News Release

WORCESTER, MA - The Monarchs scored three goals in the first period, including two from Jordan Weal, en route to a 5-2 win over Worcester at the DCU Center on Friday night.

It marked Manchester's (8-4-0-0) third straight win and fifth victory in its last six games.

Weal finished the game with a team-high three points (2 goals, assist), his second three-point game this season (also 10/24 vs. POR).

David Van der Gulik started the scoring when he tipped home a Colin Miller shot from the point 1:08 into the first period for his third goal of the season. It marked the 10th time in 12 games that the Monarchs scored first.

Weal made it 2-0 Manchester at 13:00 in the first period when he went top shelf on Sharks goalie J.P. Anderson on a break down the right side of the ice.

Weal struck again at 15:33 when he snapped a shot from the low slot on the power play that beat Anderson to make it 3-0 Monarchs. The goal gave Weal his first multi-goal game since he had a hat trick on April 5 of last season against Portland.

Colin Miller took a high-sticking penalty at 18:10 in the first period and Matt Tennyson scored on the power play 13 seconds later to make the score 3-1.

Neither team scored in the second period, with Worcester outshooting the Monarchs in the frame, 11-8.

Matt Taormina cut the lead to 3-2 when he scored at 18:23 in the third on the power play.

The Sharks pulled their goalie after that goal, but Sean Backman scored an empty-netter at 18:35 and Nick Shore followed with an empty-net goal of his own at 19:15 to finish the scoring. It was Shore's team-high sixth goal of the season.

The Monarchs will play host to the Providence Bruins tomorrow night at the Verizon Wireless Arena for a 7 p.m. game on "Mullets in Movember Night". The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a mullet wig and mustache, while a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

Notes:

* Sean Backman had two points tonight (goal, assist), bringing his career total to 99 points in the AHL. * The Monarchs are outscoring opponents 15-5 in the first period this season. * Nick Shore has tallied five points in his last three games combined after scoring a goal tonight.
