Bulldogs Edge IceCaps in Overtime

St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps were unable to complete the two-game sweep of the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night as the opposition came away with a 2-1 overtime win at Mile One Centre.

Charles Hudon scored in regulation and added the game-winner in overtime for the Bulldogs, who snapped a three-game winless streak with the victory.

John Albert added the lone IceCaps goal while starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was rock solid, turning away 40 of 42 Hamilton shots.

The Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead after the first period thanks to a goal from their leading scorer Hudon. He took a great goalmouth pass from T.J. Hensick and had two whacks at the puck before finally flipping it over the outstretched pad of Hellebuyck just 1:13 into the game. Rene Bourque earned the second assist on the play, giving him his first point as a member of the Bulldogs.

The IceCaps pulled even in the second but it took them almost the entire period to do so. Bulldogs starter Mike Condon lost sight of the puck during a scramble in front of the net. Brassard was able to find it in the slot before slipping a pass to Albert, who roofed it into the open net to tie the game with 12 seconds left in the period.

The game turned rough throughout the second and third periods as three different IceCaps (Nicolas Blanchard, Scott Kosmachuk and Patrice Cormier) each dropped the gloves for a fight. Three fighting majors is now the most the IceCaps have recorded in a single game all season.

The teams skated to a scoreless third period, sending the IceCaps to overtime for the sixth time in 17 contests this season.

Just 1:45 into in the extra frame, Hudon took a behind-the-net pass from former Winnipeg Jet Eric Tangradi and buried it beyond the outstretched pad of Hellebuyck to end the game.

The IceCaps host the Toronto Marlies at Mile One next Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 18th and 19th. Tickets are available at the Mile One Centre Box Office in-person from 12-5 p.m., by phone at 709-576-7657 and online at www.mileonecentre.com.
