Amerks Community Assist Week Returns for Second Straight Year

November 14, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans announced today that the team will hold their second Amerks Community Assist Week from Nov. 17-21. The community initiative will involve Amerks players, coaches and team officials supporting a variety of different non-profit organizations and community outreach programs throughout the Greater Rochester Area.

The Amerks' Community Assist Week, modeled after a program launched by the Buffalo Sabres last season, will be a week-long endeavor and will take place between Monday, Nov. 17 and Friday, Nov. 21. The five-day venture will feature Amerks players and staff participating in a special construction project at the Sunshine Rotary Campus, their third annual ball hockey game against students at Holy Childhood and visiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester's Thanksgiving Dinner. In addition, front office members will prepare breakfast for residents and families of the local Ronald McDonald House and the team will host a Food Drive to benefit Foodlink.

The schedule of events for the Amerks' Community Assist Week is as follows:

Monday, Nov. 17: Sunshine Rotary Campus Treehouse Project

Several Amerks players will go to the Sunshine Rotary Campus in Rush, NY, to assist the Rochester Rotary in the construction of a fully accessible wooden treehouse, the first of its kind in the region. When constructed, the treehouse will feature wheelchair-accessible ramps, wide platforms, sensory equipment for enhanced learning, a cabin enclosure and tree-top views for campers. For over 90 years, Rochester Rotary's summer camping program for young people with disabilities, called Sunshine Camp, has been spreading sunshine to thousands of campers in the Rochester community. For more information, visit www.sunshinecampus.org.

Tuesday, Nov. 18: Holy Childhood Hockey Game

For the third straight year, a small contingent of Amerks players will trade in their skates for sneakers as they take on a team of student-athletes in a ball hockey game at Holy Childhood. For more than 65 years, Holy Childhood, a non-denominational, non-profit agency, has enriched the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Dedicated to serving its students in an atmosphere of dignity and compassion, the school's mission is to prepare children and adults with developmental disabilities for maximum independence and integration in the community through individualized programs and services, in keeping with the philosophy and vision of the school's founders.

Wednesday, Nov. 19: Celebrity Bartending Fundraiser for Lipson Cancer Center

AHL Hall of Famer Jody Gage, the Amerks' all-time leading scorer, will serve as a celebrity bartender at a fundraiser for the Lipson Cancer Center at The Original Crab Shack (749 E. Henrietta Road), hosted by Urology Associates of Rochester (UAR). UAR has partnered with the Amerks for the month of "Movember" as several Amerks players are growing mustaches throughout the month to raise awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. The Lipson Cancer Center, a part of Rochester General Health Systems, is a recognized leader in the treatment of cancer and blood disorders.

Thursday, Nov. 20: Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester

Amerks players will visit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester's annual Thanksgiving dinner to visit with kids and help serve dinner. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester provides youth development programs that enable young people to acquire the skills and qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. Its mission is to "inspire and enable young people of all backgrounds to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens."

Friday, Nov. 21: Ronald McDonald House and Food Drive For Foodlink

The Amerks' "Community Assist" Program will conclude on Friday, Nov. 21 as Amerks Front Office members cook and provide breakfast for the residents and families at the local Ronald McDonald House. Established in 1990, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Rochester provides a "home away from home" each year for families of critically injured and seriously ill children and supports programs that improve the health, education and wellbeing of children.

Also on Friday, the Amerks will hold a Food Drive to benefit Foodlink, the regional food bank, during the game against the Utica Comets at 7:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. Fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items by dropping them off in collection bins in front of The Blue Cross Arena Box Office prior to the game. The items will then be donated to Foodlink. Later this month, members of the Amerks will assist Foodlink in sorting and packaging food at their warehouse prior to Thanksgiving. Any fan that donates two unopened, non-perishable food items in the Foodlink bins prior to the game will be eligible to purchase "Buy One-Get One Free" tickets to the Nov. 21 game. Foodlink, the regional food bank, provides food, nutrition, education and resources in Western and Central New York. As a member of Feeding America, Foodlink rescues and redistributes over 13 million pounds of food to 450 human service agencies.
