Worcester Sharks News Release

Worcester, MA.- The Worcester Sharks (8-4-1-0, 17pts) three game winning streak came to an end after a 5-2 loss to the Manchester Monarchs (8-4-0-0, 16pts) in front of 2,805 fans at the DCU Center on Friday night. The Sharks host the Springfield Falcons on Saturday at 7pm with the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Bay State Savings Bank.

Matt Tennyson extended his point streak to four games with his third goal of the season and Matt Taormina scored late in the third period to get the Sharks within a goal. Manchester charged out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back led by Jordan Weal's three point game (2-1-3). JP Anderson allowed three goals on 32 shots in the loss for Worcester in his second straight start in goal while JF Berube picked up the win for Manchester with 28 saves.

A rather feisty first period saw four total goals, a heavy weight fight and plenty of hard hitting checks. Manchester grabbed an early 1-0 lead at 1:08 as David Van der Gulik (3rd) deflected home a shot from the point past JP Anderson. Jimmy Bonneau (3rd FM) fought Josh Gratton (6th FM) at 3:28 in a long battle deep in the Sharks zone as Bonneau threw a number of right hands before the refs jumped in. The Monarchs went ahead 3-0 after Jordan Weal (4th and 5th) scored at 13:00 and on the power play at 15:33. Worcester would strike on the power play as Matt Tennyson (3rd) extended his point streak to four games after he rushed down the right wing side and snapped a shot from 35 feet that got through JF Berube at 18:23. Shots were 15-12 in favor of Manchester as the Sharks trailed 3-1 after 20 minutes.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period with the best chance coming off the stick of captain Bryan Lerg with a slap shot from the left circle on the rush that was stopped by the glove of Berube just five minutes in. Worcester tent 0-2 on the power play in the middle frame and outshot the Monarchs 11-7 in the scoreless period.

Worcester scored a late goal in the third period as Matt Taormina (2nd) fired home a puck from the right circle with the extra attacker on the ice to cut the Monarchs lead to 3-2 at 17:47. But the Monarchs would score a pair of empty net goals at 18:35 (Sean Backman 4th) and 19:15 (Nick Shore 6th) as Worcester fell by a final score of 5-2.

The Sharks overall record falls to 8-4-1-0, 17pts, and 5-3-1-0, 11pts on home ice this season
