November 14, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
A five-on-three power play for the opposition proved to be the turning point Friday night, as a pair of Adirondack Flames power play goals put the Lake Erie Monsters (4-7-1-1) behind for the duration, and propelled the Adirondack (7-6-1-0) to a 4-2 victory over the Monsters before 8,575 fans at Quicken Loans Arena. Mike Sgarbossa and Tomas Vincour each scored for the Monsters in the loss. The Monsters have a rematch with Adirondack scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m at The Q.
Adirondack opened the scoring, capitalizing on a Monsters defensive zone turnover at 13:41 of the first period. Ben Hanowski picked up possession, moved in on the net, and quickly snapped a shot top-shelf on Monsters goalie Roman Will, but the Monsters countered with a pair of goals before the period ended. Mike Sgarbossa tied the game at 1-1 when he led a two-on-one rush up the ice and scored on a wrist shot from the right circle for his first goal of the season. Sgarbossa's goal was assisted by Michael Schumacher and Colin Smith. Tomas Vincour gave the Monsters a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season, finishing off a give-and-go play in the right circle with a quick one-timer that beat Flames goalie Joni Ortio. Ben Street also assisted on the first period go-ahead tally.
Adirondack regained a one-goal lead in the second period with two power play goals 36 seconds apart. On a five-on-three, Bill Arnold finished a picture-perfect setup with a tap-in at 3:38 of the frame, and Hanowski netted his second of the game on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle at 4:14 of the second period. The Flames led 3-2 after two periods.
Hanowski was credited with an empty-net goal in the third period, completing his hat trick and securing a 4-2 victory for Adirondack.
Roman Will started in net for the Monsters, stopping 20 of 23 shots. Will is 0-3-0 after the loss. Joni Ortio stopped 27 of 29 shots for Adirondack; he is 6-3-1 on the season.
The Monsters host Adirondack again Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game airs live on 99X (99.1 FM).
