AHL Milwaukee Admirals

Waiting game ends for Milwaukee

November 6, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release

OVERALL...The Admirals currently sit in last place in the AHL's West Division with five points and a 2-3-1 record, however the Admirals have played the fewest games in the league (6), while every other team in the West has played at least 11 contests. That trend will start to reverse itself this week as the Ads start a stretch that will see them play an astounding 35 times from November 9th through January 14th, a total of 67 days.

VS. ALBANY...The Admirals and the Albany River Rats will play for the first time ever this Thursday at 7:00 pm at the Bradley Center. The River Rats are in their first season as the primary affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, after spending the previous 13 seasons with the New Jersey Devils. While the Admirals have never played the Rats, they did post a 2-1 record versus the Albany Choppers during the 1990-91 season in the old International Hockey League.

VS. GRAND RAPIDS...The Admirals take on the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday night in Grand Rapids for the first eight games between the two clubs this season. The Van Andel Arena has been a veritable house of horrors for the Admirals, where they have won just nine times in 35 tries, their worst road winning percentage (.343) against an active AHL team. Last year in the regular season the Admirals were 2-3-3 against the Griffs, including a 1-1-2 mark in GR. However, Milwaukee swept Grand Rapids, 4-0, in the Western Conference Finals to advance to their second Calder Cup Finals in two years.

VS. PEORIA...The Peoria Rivermen make the trip north to Milwaukee for a 1:30 matinee on Saturday afternoon versus the Admirals, the first of ten contests between the two teams. Last season versus the Rivermen, their first in the AHL, the Admirals had a 4-2-1-1 mark, but were outscored 28-26. At the Bradley Center the Ads posted a 2-1-1 mark versus Peoria. Out of the 25 players currently on the Rivermen roster, 18 of them spent last season in Peoria.

LAST WEEK...In their only game of the week, the Admirals fell in overtime to the Iowa Stars last Friday night at the Bradley Center. Milwaukee led for the majority of the contest, but the Stars tied the game on a third period goal by Marius Holtet and then won it when Joel Lundqvist ripped a slapshot that rang off the crossbar and into the Admirals net at 1:50 of the extra session. Pat Leahy and Jason Guerriero notched goals for the Ads, while Scott Reid stopped a season high 36 shots in the loss.

MILWAUKEE, SOUTH... A quick look at the score sheet from the Nashville Predators two wins over Edmonton and Vancouver last week shows the success that players who have come through Milwaukee have had. Out of eight goals that the Preds scored, six of them came off the sticks of former Admirals, including rookie Alexander Radulov who started the season with the Ads and was recently called up. Vern Fiddler, Scottie Upshall, and Shea Weber all lit the lamp for the first time, while former Milwaukee backliner Ryan Suter picked up two tallies.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD... It was Omaha who had the first and last power play goal against the Admirals this season. After allowing two PPGs to the Knights in their season opener, a 7-1 loss, the Admirals have not allowed a single one in their last five games. They have successfully defended 23 in a row and are 27 for 29 (.931) on the penalty kill this season, which is second in the AHL. As good as they have been on the penalty kill, the Admirals have struggled at times when they are a man up, converting just six of 38 (15.8%) chances.

ALUMNI WATCH... During the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs, the Admirals top line of Simon Gamache, Darren Haydar, and Greg Classen led the team to the Calder Cup finals and they were also members of the team's 2004 AHL Championship squad. While they no longer don Admirals sweaters, all three are enjoying continued success on the rink. Gamache is the leading scorer with 23 points (4g-19a) in 15 games for SC Bern, which plays in the top professional league in Switzerland, while Classen is fifth on the Hamburg Freezers with 15 points (3g-12a). Haydar has continued right where he left off last season, after leading the AHL in post-season scoring. The Milton, ONT native is second in the AHL with 21 points (10g-11a) in 12 contests with the Chicago Wolves.

PROMOTIONS... On Saturday, November 11th the Admirals take on the Peoria Rivermen in a 1:30 matinee and the first 4,000 fans will receive a set of dog tags, courtesy of Pedigree. In addition, all veterans receive a free Stern and Bow ticket by showing proper ID at the Bradley Center Box Office. It is also Foley and Lardner Family Day where fans can purchase four tickets, four sodas, and four hotdogs for just $34.

OVER THE AIR AND ON THE WEB... The Admirals enter their second season airing their games on Milwaukee's ESPN Radio 1510 AM (days)/1290 AM (nights) with Aaron Sims calling all of the hard-hitting end-to-end action. In addition, the team has a one-hour hockey magazine dubbed "Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice" that airs every Tuesday from 6-7 pm on ESPN Radio. Fans can watch all Admirals games, home and on the road, live on the internet via B2 Networks. Simply go the Admirals website at www.milwaukeeadmirals.com and click on the B2 Logo.
