Orlando, FL - Forward Francis Verreault-Paul tallied his first two goals as a Solar Bear to lead Orlando to a 4-2 victory over the Toledo Walleye at the Amway Center on Monday night. Forward C.J. Severyn notched the game-winning goal for the second straight game when he deflected a shot from D Blake Kessel early in the third to snap a 2-2 tie.
For the seventh-straight home game, the Solar Bears scored the first goal of the game. F Mike Ullrich forced a turnover to Verreault-Paul and he slipped a shot under the glove of goaltender Mac Carruth 1:19 into the game. Toledo answered on the power play at 9:03 when a shot from F Marek Tvrdon tipped off a stickblade and into the top corner to tie the game 1-1. A little under five minutes later, during four-on-four action, D Bryce Aneloski slid a pass to Kessel who fired a shot off the crossbar and into the net. Once again, Toledo found the equalizer shortly afterward. F Kyle Rogers led a three-on-one rush up the ice and dished up a one-timer goal for F Alden Hirschfeld. The two sides went into the first intermission locked in a 2-2 score.
The Solar Bears held a 14-3 shots on goal advantage in the middle frame, but could not solve Carruth as the game went into the third frame still knotted up a 2-2.
Orlando snapped the 2-2 tie 3:51 into the third period. While on the power play, Kessel blasted a slap shot from the blue line and Severyn redirected the puck past Carruth to grant Orlando a 3-2 lead. Verreault-Paul polished off the contest with 1:47 left to go in the game when he picked up his own rebound and lifted a shot underneath the crossbar for the final 4-2 score. G Christopher Gibson stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced to earn the victory.
