Kane County Cougars News Release
Peoria, Illinois - Jhon Torres capped a four-run sixth inning with a bases-clearing double to lead the Peoria Chiefs (22-29) over the Kane County Cougars (28-24), 5-2, on Wednesday night at Dozer Park. Cougars reliever Bryan Menendez took the loss in his first Midwest League outing.
For the second straight night, the Cougars took an early lead. Jose Herrera cracked a first inning solo homer. In the second, Keshawn Lynch produced a run with a sacrifice fly. However, the Cougar offense was shunned the rest of the night. Between the third and ninth innings, the club left eight runners on the bases, including leaving two aboard in the eighth with the tying run at the plate.
The Chiefs chipped away in the fifth with a Brendan Donovan RBI double. The Chiefs snatched the lead away in the sixth for good. A pair of singles and a fielder's choice against Menendez loaded the bases with no one out. Menendez struck out Leandro Cedeno to get the first out of the inning, but was removed from the game after getting Cedeno.
Wesley Rodriguez inherited the bases-loaded jam and walked in the tying run with Josh Shaw at the plate. A batter later, Torres doubled to left, scoring all three base runners and giving the Chiefs a 5-2 edge.
Cougar starter Jackson Goddard did not get a decision, despite his second straight outing without an earned run. He lasted 4.2 innings. Menendez (0-1) took the loss after getting charged with three runs over 0.2 innings. Peoria starter Colin Schmid (2-1) earned the win. He tossed six innings and allowed two runs (one earned). Evan Sisk (1) nailed down the save.
The Cougars and Chiefs play the rubber game of the three-game series Thursday night at 6:35 P.M. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
