Paulson Powers Loons in Comeback
May 30, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
BOWLING GREEN, KY - With the Great Lakes Loons trailing 5-3 entering the ninth inning, they were in need of their second come back of the night against the first place Bowling Green Hot Rods. After tying the game in the ninth, Dillon Paulson hit a jimmy jack home run and the Loons stole game two in their current three-game series, 8-5.
The ninth inning comeback for the Loons (31-19) was the second multi-run deficit they battled back from in the game. Great Lakes trailed 3-0 going to the sixth when a Paulson RBI-groundout and a Niko Hulsizer RBI-double brought them within one run. Miguel Vargas then tied the game on a run-scoring double in the eighth inning. Vargas also tied the game in the ninth before Paulson ultimately won it.
All of the ninth inning damage for the Loons came against Hots Rods (32-21) reliever Chris Muller, who entered play with a 1.99 ERA and was four-for-four in save opportunities this year. Muller (L, 0-4) gave up five earned runs on five hits and three walks in the ninth inning.
Jackson came into the game with just four earned runs allowed in his last 39 2/3 innings and while he ceded three runs in six innings on Wednesday night, his ERA still sits at a minuscule 2.23. The right-hander struck out eight Hot Rods while walking two. Guillermo Zuniga (W, 2-0) pitched in relief and allowed two earned runs in two innings.
Nathan Witt was called upon in the bottom of the ninth to finish the comeback for the Loons. Witt (S, 5) needed just 13 pitches to dispose of Bowling Green in order.
With the win, the Loons regain the top spot in the Midwest League Eastern Division and hold a half-game lead on the Hot Rods going into the series finale on Thursday. The win also snapped a seven-game win streak for BG and halted a three-game losing streak for GL.
Game three from Bowling Green Ballpark is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT Thursday night.
