Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green is tied for second in the Eastern Division, a half game behind the Loons who are leading the division. Tomorrow Bowling Green will begin a six-game road trip over seven days with the series opener against the Lansing Lugnuts.
About Last Night... On Wednesday night, the Hot Rods looked to continue their winning streak, as well as extend their divisional lead over Great Lakes. Early on, things looked good as the Hot Rods took the early lead on a three-run homer by Grant Witherspoon in the bottom of the first. For the first five innings, Shane McClanahan held the Loons off the board, with the main highlight being Tony Pena climbing the wall to rob James Outman of a home run in the third. In the sixth, though, Great Lake scored twice off McClanahan as Dillon Paulson grounded out to bring in a run, followed by a double off the bat off Niko Hulsizer to make it 3-2, Bowling Green. The Loons tied the game in the eighth off Cristopher Sanchez, thanks to a Miguel Vargas double. The Hot Rods responded as Wander Franco and Chris Betts slashed RBI singles in the bottom fo the eighth to put BG up 5-3. However Great Lakes scored five runs in the ninth, with Paulson's three-run homer breaking the tie and giving Great Lakes the 8-5 win, snapping the Hot Rods' seven-game winning streak and propelling the Loons back to first place.
Streaking is Now Cancelled... With the loss last night, the Hot Rods' seven-game winning streak came to an end. The streak was the longest by Bowling Green this season and the most consecutive wins since an eight-game stretch from August 19-26 of last season. Had the Hot Rods won last night, it would've been the eighth winning streak of at least eight games in franchise history. Additionally, the Hot Rods lost for the first time this season when leading after eight innings, having previously started 28-0. Going back to last year, the Hot Rods had won 90 consecutive games when leading after eight innings, dating back to May 14, 2018.
But This Wander-ful Streak Continues... Wander Franco's streak of multi-hit games continued on last night as he went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, picking up his sixth-consecutive multi-hit effort. He now has a team-high 17 multi-hit games. Over a period of time dating back to May 13, Franco has collected 11 multi-hit games in the 14 that he has played. In that span, he has gone 24-for-62 (.387) with five doubles, a home run, and eight RBI. In the process, he has raised his average from .274 to .318, which ranks fifth in the Midwest League.
Bootleggers are Back... The Bowling Green Bootleggers return to action tonight for the third Bootlegger Thursday of the season. So far, the Bootleggers are 6-1 all-time, including a 2-1 mark this season. However, Bowling Green suffered their first loss under the Bootleggers moniker during their most recent outing, falling to Clinton on May 9.
