Captains Finish Season-Long Road Trip Strong

May 30, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lake County Captains News Release

(South Bend, IN) - The Lake County Captains (32-21) wrapped up a 12-game, 11-day road trip on Thursday with a 5-1 victory over the South Bend Cubs (29-23) in the rubber game of a three-game series at Four Winds Field. Lake County finished 8-4 on the road trip and Thursday's win made the Captains the first team to beat the Cubs in a series in South Bend this year.

Captains starter Cody Morris spun five strong innings, en route to the win, and the right-hander got some run support in the third inning. The Captains caught a break when Jonathan Sierra dropped a Miguel Jerez pop up in right to begin the inning. Jesse Berardi then went deep for the second day in a row, pulling a two-run homer down the right field line. The long ball was not only Berardi's second in as many days, but his second of the year, and it gave the Captains a 2-0 lead.

A Cubs killer helped extend the lead to 3-0 the next inning. Will Benson led off the fourth and cranked his league-leading 14th homer of the year over the wall in right-centerfield. The homer was Benson's sixth against South Bend this season.

Lake County tacked on two more runs in the fifth. After Berardi began the inning with a double to right-center, the runner got caught between second and third when Cubs starting pitcher Riley Thompson speared a Hosea Nelson grounder. Thompson chased Berardi to third, but third baseman Chris Morel dropped Thompson's toss, allowing Berardi to reach third and Nelson to chug into second. The Captains loaded the bases on an infield single by Jose Fermin and then scored a pair when Berardi came home on a wild pitch and Benson knocked in Nelson with a sacrifice fly to right. The twin runs gave Lake County a 5-0 lead.

The Cubs scratched across their only run in the bottom of the fifth. Brennen Davis worked a leadoff walk and Edmond Americaan singled. The Captains turned a 4-6-3 double play against Eric Gonzalez and Davis moved up to third. Davis then scored on a wild pitch to cut the Captains' lead to 5-1.

After Eli Lingos, Riley Echols and Kyle Marman combined to blank the Cubs over the last four innings, Morris (3-1) earned the win. The right-hander held South Bend to one run over five innings. He struck out six, walked two and surrendered four hits.

Thompson (3-3) took the loss for South Bend. He allowed five runs, two earned, over five innings. Thompson surrendered five hits, walked one and struck out three.

The Captains head home after their longest road trip of the year and will start a three-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday. First pitch at Classic Park is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
