Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) Dating back to last season, The Toledo Storm (6-2-0) had not lost a game against the Reading Royals (3-3-3) at Toledo Sports Arena in 8 consecutive games; and on Friday night, that trend continued. The Storm rattled off three unanswered goals, two in the third period, to earn a 5-4 come from behind win in front of 4,113 fans at One Main.
Arpad Mihaly opened the scoring halfway through the first period as he put one past Storm goaltender Logan Koopmans. He added another in the second period, at the 2:56 mark, to give the Royals a two-goal cushion. Greg Hogeboom would tally not even two minutes later; his third of the season gave the Royals a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Storm would answer though, when Matt Zultek beat the Royals goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji to pull Toledo within two at 6:50 of the second. Andrew Martin added an assist, extending his point-scoring streak to 6 games; Jamie Tardif also helped on the goal. The Storm would pull within one when Ken Magowan tipped home a shot from his knees, making it 3-2 Reading. However, Arpad Mihaly earned the hat trick at 13:23 of the second period, putting the Royals back up by 2.
After that, though, it would be all Toledo Storm. Chris Blight scored with 5:05 remaining in the second period to bring the Storm back into striking distance, Ken Magowan and Dan Watson adding assists. Then the Red and White tied it with a goal from Mike Berry at the 11:31 mark of the third period; Watson and Nick Parillo notching assists. 90 seconds later, the Storm would cap off three unanswered goals, as Jamie Tardif tipped home a pass from Matt Zultek, giving Toledo a 5-4 lead and ultimately a thrilling come-from-behind victory.
Logan Koopmans made 30 saves to earn his fifth win of the season; Royals starting goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji turned aside 32 saves in a losing effort before leaving the game with an injury in the third period. With the victory, Toledo takes sole possession of 1st place in the North Division.
The Storm will now embark on just their second road contest of the season, as they meet the Johnstown Chiefs on Saturday night at 7:00 PM from Cambria County War Memorial. Saturday's game will be the second meeting between the two clubs, with Toledo taking the season-series opener by a 5-3 final score on November 1st.
